Hidden under the tower, the dazzling monolithic
church was entirely carved out from one single

The greater
SAINT-ÉMILION AREA
is a vast territory of 238 km2 which extends between
Libourne and Castillon-la-Bataille. The 22 exceptional
villages offer a multitude of aspects for visitors:
vineyards, architectural heritage and wide open spaces.
UNESCO has included eight of these villages
on the World Heritage Listing for their
"cultural landscapes" and the Dordogne
as a "biosphere reserve".

Belvès-de-Castillon
Marked by the end of the Hundred
Years War, the town welcomes every
year the show “La Bataille de Castillon”

Francs
After the battle of Vouillé in 507, Clovis
seizes Aquitaine. A detachment of the
Frankish army settles in a place which
takes the Latin name “ad francos”
that means “belonging to the Francs”,
and that become later “Francs”.
Gardegan-et-Tourtirac
Gardegan-et-Tourtirac seems to have
been inhabited since the prehistoric

& TRADITIONS
have shaped the landscapes, culture and art of living
of the Greater Saint-Émilion Area. The installation
of the Breton hermit Émilion in the heart of its former
forest, followed by five religious orders, has marked
the architectural heritage of the territory as evidenced
by monasteries, convents and churches. These coexist
with more than 10 000 hectares of vines that cover
our territory and over 200 km of underground galleries.

 In the beginnings: a religious site
In the 8th century, a Breton named Émilion decided to leave Vannes,
his native land, to devote himself to prayer. His wanderings would have taken
him to an abbey where he became a monk and then to Ascumbas, the ancient
name of our territory.
Living in a cave, he was joined by some Benedictine disciples,
founded a first religious community and evangelised the population.
After the death of Émilion - around 787 - a village was built in his honor.
Between the 8th and 18th centuries, five religious orders coexisted or succeeded
each other in the heart of the medieval city, turning it into a high monastic place.
Benedictines, Augustinians, Franciscans, Dominicans and Ursuline sisters
welcomed for several centuries the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The golden age:

extraction of limestone
Between the 9th and the 19th century, the stone was massively
extracted from the limestone plateau creating an immense
network of 80 ha of underground galleries forming a labyrinth
of almost 200 km.
This limestone rock was exploited relentlessly by the quarrymen
of Saint-Émilion and was used for the construction
of the medieval city and some Bordeaux monuments
such as the Grand Théâtre.
It is thanks to the river transport on the Dordogne with
the gabares (traditional barges) and “coureaux”, small robust
ships with flat bases, that stones and food were transported
towards the port of Bordeaux and the Atlantic coast since
the Middle Ages. The Dordogne, was several hundred years ago,
a key factor to the economic development of the area.
World fame: wine
Viticulture was always present on the right bank of Bordeaux.
From the 2nd century, the Romans planted the first vines. After the collapse
of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, viticulture survived and spread
due to Christianity, which made wine a central element of worship;
the religious then grew the vine.
But it was in the Middle Ages, when Aquitaine was attached
to the Kingdom of England, that the wines of Saint-Émilion obtained
their letters of nobility. The subdivision of the vineyard and the current
grape varieties dates also back to this time.
However, it is only from the 19th century that we speak of monoculture
in the Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion. The importance of wine on our
territory was notably reflected in the creation in 1884 of the first French
Wine Producers Union in Saint-Émilion, now known as the Wine Council.

of the Saint-Émilion Area. Wine plays a big role
in our gastronomic culture and will delight your taste buds.
Three partner restaurants of the Tourist Office have obtained
Michelin stars: L'Hostellerie de Plaisance** and Le Logis
de la Cadène* in Saint-Émilion as well as L'Auberge Saint-Jean*
in Saint-Jean de Blaignac!

macaroons, our macaroons are “only”
made from sweet and bitter almonds,
eggs white and sugar!

of Crémant de Bordeaux (sparkling
white or rosé wine made according
to the traditional method) has been
perpetuated since the 19th century
both under the King’s Keep
and in the darkness of the underground
quarries of the old Franciscan monastery.
Eat
The Lamprey,
a local dish
The lamprey - sometimes nicknamed
"Vampire of the Seas" - is an aquatic
animal that appeared about 500 million
years ago. It is emblematic of the
Saint-Émilion Area and the symbol
of the village of Sainte-Terre.
Commonly used in pie preparations
in the Middle Ages, the lamprey still
is today a traditional dish. Since 1913,
the name "Lamproie à la Bordelaise"
allows visitors to immerse themselves
in our regional culture.

WORLD
HERITAGE SITE
The Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion was listed
as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, for its
“cultural landscape”. A world first for a vineyard!

According to UNESCO, “the Jurisdiction

of Saint-Émilion is an outstanding example
of a historic vineyard landscape that has survived
intact and in activity to the present day”. It also
“exceptionally illustrates intensive cultivation
of the vine in a region defined with precision".

A cultural landscape
Everything in this territory reminds us that Man and Nature have worked hand
in hand developing the wine culture that started more than 2 000 years ago.
A "cultural landscape" like the one of the Jurisdiction is sculpted by its history
and geography.
Religious architectures, vineyard architectures, or small heritage buildings
from past generations (vine cabins, wash houses, windmills, etc.), are reminders
of our past society and how it has managed to hand down knowledge
from generation to generation.

The 8 municipalities
of the Jurisdiction
For the medieval city of Saint-Émilion and the surrounding villages, the 800
years of exceptional history and human adventure are acknowledged thanks
to this UNESCO registration. The vineyard spreads from Saint-Christophe-
des-Bardes, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Étienne-
de-Lisse, Saint-Pey-d'Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens to Vignonet.
Throughout this period, from 1199 when the Jurade was established until
1999, it will define itself as a "family and viticultural community".
This definition is one of the foundations of the UNESCO registration.
A recognition in which its inhabitants take great pride: throughout these
years, each have in their own way, contributed to the success and durability
of the vineyard of Saint-Émilion.
The Dordogne,
a biosphere reserve
On July 11th 2012, the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's
"Man and Biosphere" program integrated the Dordogne basin into the world
network of Biosphere Reserves.
The recognition offered by the world network of Biosphere reserves
highlights the exceptional territory through which the Dordogne River runs,
thanks to its preserved nature, its cultural heritage and its lifestyle.

OF WINE
CULTURE
The exceptionality of the Saint-Émilion vineyard
is explained by its remarkable geology combined
with a microclimate, perfectly adapted to the vine
culture. The Romans were the first to invest
the local soil in the 2nd century and to plant the first
vines. There is no doubt that wine already occupied
an important place in the Gallo-Roman period,
although we only speak of monoculture
in the Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion as from
the 19th century.

Created in 1990, this AOC produces white or rosé sparkling
