PROCEDURE

Introduction Time

 SAY: Today we are going to start our unit of “Area, Perimeter and Volume”. 1 min
Today we are going to focus on Area.
Body Time

Introducing 1. ASK: Can anyone give me a definition of area? 2

Area DO: Choose students to answer- about 4 or 5 answers. mins
Definition: The amount of space inside the boundary of a 2D object.

Area of a 2D 1. SAY: The equation for area of a 2D shape is 4

shape Area= Length x Width mins
2. SAY: When we are calculating the area of something, the units
are m2. These are the units and we are basically trying to figure
out how many boxes will fit into the space. (m x m= m2)
3. SAY: Let’s try some examples together:

Example 1:
Draw a rectangle with the dimensions of 2 by 4
Area= 8 m2

Example 2:
Draw a rectangle with the dimensions of 20 by 8
Area= 160 cm2

4. SAY: Try these ones on your own, put your hand up when you
have the answer

Example 3:
A rectangle with the dimensions of 7 by 9
Area= 64 mm2

Example 4:
A square with the dimension of 10 by 10
Area= 100 m2

Minecraft 1. SAY: Please go get a laptop, log on and find Minecraft 35

Time 2. SAY: When you have logged onto the computer and Minecraft, go mins
ahead and create a pen that would be used to house animals.

**5 minutes**

3. SAY: When you are done building your pen, you must take a
screenshot of what you have created. Take pictures from above
or the sides so that the length and width are visible. Please
save this onto a word document.
4. SAY: Now you will calculate the 2D area of the pen. Remember
that 1 block= 1m

**2 minutes**
5. SAY: Now, you are going to build a house.

** 10 minutes**

1. SAY: When you are done building your house, you must take
screenshots of the house that you have created. Take pictures
of all the sides so that the length and height are visible. Please
save this onto the same word document as the pen.
2. SAY: Please calculate the area of each wall and the total area
of the walls combined.
3. SAY: In the next 18 minutes, you must create 2 more pens,
houses or buildings. Again, you must take a screenshot and
calculate its area. Please add it to the word document.

Conclusion Time

 SAY: Once you have finished your 4 buildings/pens, you must print them off and 3
hand them into the teacher. You can have free time on Minecraft after you have mins
handed in your work.
 SAY: If you have any questions while you are working on building or calculating
area you can ask the teacher or neighboring students.
 SAY: Please shut the computers down and put them away.

Assessment

 Observation: Observing students engagement and involvement with the discussion

about area and the examples.
 Minecraft Work: Formative assessment of students understanding of area

Examples:

The pen I built was 6 m (blocks) long and 5 m wide.

A=L x W
A=6m x 5m
A= 30 m2

****This does not include the roof triangle as that will be another lesson***
The end of the house I built was 6 m (blocks) long and 6 m high.

Area of the end of the house=

A=H x W
6 x 6= 36 m2

The side of the house I built was 9 m (blocks) long and 6 m high.

Area of side of house=

A=H x W
6 x 9= 54 m2

The total area of all the walls of the house is:

End +Side+End+Side=A
36+54+36+54=180 m2
Lesson Title/Focus Class #2: Perimeter in Minecraft Course Math: Grade 5

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

GLO: Shape and Space

SLO:
 2. Design and construct different rectangles when given either perimeter or area, or both
(whole numbers), and make generalizations

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson students will be able to:

1. Implement the correct equation to solve for perimeter.
2. Identify a perimeter question.
3. Describe the difference between a perimeter question and an area question.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

 Laptops
 Student logins
 SmartBoard
 Math Worksheet

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

 Have the laptop cart signed out for the math class
 Ensure Minecraft is installed on all of the laptops
 Have digital math worksheets made and ready for students to access

PROCEDURE

Introduction Time

 SAY: Having gone over area in the last class we are now moving forward and 2
introducing perimeter. min
 ASK: Can anyone give me a definition of perimeter?
DO: Choose students to answer- about 4 or 5 answers.
 Definition: A continuous line forming the boundary of a closed figure.
 DO: Have the smartboard on and notebook open to show the class how to do
perimeter.

Body Time

Introducing 1. DO: On the smartboard draw a square, a rectangle and a 10

Perimeter triangle. min
2. SAY: To determine the perimeter of a shape you must add the
length of each side together. The equation would be s+s+s+s=p
(side + side + side + side = perimeter). Each time you do a
perimeter question you must show the equation (s+s+s+s=p) and
include the unit, (which in this case is ‘cm’) with their final
answer.
3. SAY: For example, if each side of the square is 4 cm long, the
equation would be 4cm+4cm+4cm+4cm=16cm (s+s+s+s=p)
4. DO: Next show a triangle
5. SAY: If each side is 5 cm, the equation would be
5cm+5cm+5cm=15 cm.
6. DO: Next show a rectangle.
7. SAY: If the two short sides are 3 cm and the two longer sides are
7 cm, the equation would be 3cm+7cm+3cm+7cm=20 cm.
8. ASK: Do you have any questions?
9. DO: Answer any questions and provide more examples if
needed.

Explaining 1. DO: Have the Minecraft worksheet displayed on the smartboard. 5

Minecraft 2. SAY: We will be using Minecraft to practice how to calculate min
worksheet perimeter
3. SAY: You will create 6 different 2D shapes on Minecraft. On the
worksheet there are instructions of what the perimeter needs to
be and you must create a shape with the same perimeter.
Remember each square is equal to 1 cm.
4. SAY: After you have created a shape you are going to show your
work for solving the perimeter. The worksheet you will be using
can be found on the class Moodle Page.
5. SAY: You will need to take a screenshot of the shape that you
created and paste the photos onto the worksheet.
6. SAY: Remember the equation you are going to be using to find
perimeter is s+s+s+s=p and make sure you show the correct
units.

Minecraft 1. SAY: Please go get a laptop, log on and find Minecraft 26

2. SAY: When they have logged onto the computer and Minecraft, min
then you can get started on the worksheet.
3. SAY: You will have the remainder of class to complete the
worksheet. If you do not finish, there will be an opportunity later
to finish it.

Conclusion Time
 SAY: Once you have finished your worksheet, you must print it off and hand it 2
into the teacher. You can have free time on Minecraft after you have handed in min
your work.
 SAY: If you have any questions while you are working on building or calculating
perimeter you can ask the teacher or neighboring students.
 SAY: Please shut the computers down and put them away.

Assessment

 Observation: Observing students during the explanation of how to solve for perimeter.
 Minecraft Worksheet: the worksheet will show the students understanding of perimeter
and will indicate if it needs more review time during another class.
