at Tamil Association’s Diwali

A
uckland Tamil Association
kept its promise of
celebrating Diwali festival
in style, with the audience going on a
laugh-riot on the acts of international
artist Chinni Jayanth.
As promised in the promotions,
Tamil comedian and star Chinni
Jayanth gave a grand show at the
'Chill with Chinni' event organised by
the Auckland Tamil Association on
the occasion of Diwali celebrations
on Saturday, November 17 at
Freemans Bay Community Centre.
More than 200 members of the
Tamil community visited the ticketed
event to see stand-up comedy and
mimicry acts of Chinni Jayanth, who
is renowned for his performances followed by a dance show by local ¡¡ TAMIL BADMINTON

speeches by dignitaries, and special
facilitation of Labour MP Michael
Wood (read a detailed report on
page 5).
Subsequently, once comedian
Chinni took to the stage with his
impeccable comic timing, a laugh-
riot ensued.

eanwhile, continuing the long
tradition at the Auckland
Tamil Association Diwali events of
acknowledging special achievements
by members of Tamil community
in the field of literature, academics,
language and culture, this year
special focus was laid on the area
of sports, by awarding players of
Auckland Tamil Badminton club,
which has recently held a major
tournament.

Cornwall Park District
School in Greenlane were
joined by the parents and families on
Friday, November 16, in celebrating
Diwali at the school premises.
The school has hosted the biggest
festival of the Indian community for
the last two years and took a step
ahead this year with a much grand
celebration.
The enthusiasm of the festival
was evident amongst the young
students as they put henna on their
hands, participated in face painting,
dance and singing activities and their
colourful Indian wear.
The school premises were
decorated with Rangoli and lightings
all around the campus with Indian
sweets and cuisines for everyone.
Jenine Irwin, the Principal of the
school, told The Indian Weekender,
“Diwali is always an anticipated
event each year, as it provides a
wonderful opportunity for our
Indian children and their families
to celebrate their culture, while also
allowing children of other cultures to
learn more about the Indian culture.
“All children are invited to wear
traditional Indian dress for the day
and staff also get into the spirit of the
day by dressing in cultural attire.

“During the morning children
across the school take part in a
range of art and language activities,
as well as having the opportunity to
sample some Indian treats supplied
by parents.
“This is followed by an afternoon
assembly where children share
what they have learnt as well as
highlighting children who learn
Indian dance and traditional
instruments.
“A highlight for staff is always the
wonderful feast that parents provide
for them at lunchtime, and it also
creates a great opportunity for staff
and parents to get to know each other
a little better,” Ms Irvin said.
Meanwhile, several parents
participating in the school celebrations
told The Indian Weekender that they
really appreciated school’s effort in
celebrating one of India’s biggest
festivals as it gives their children
an opportunity to feel proud of their
roots and culture.
“We are glad to see such cultural
inclusiveness in the school and the
enthusiasm from non-Indian students
and staff for Diwali, which is truly
incredible,” a parent contributing
to the Diwali celebrations at the
school said.

told The Indian Weekender, “This is just to
acknowledge and appreciate Mr Wood’s special
relation and bonding with the Tamil community.
“Members of our Association and the wider
Tamil community have long felt the support
that Mr Wood extends to our people, and more
importantly his appreciation of Tamil language
and culture in our repeated engagements is
beyond mistakable,” Mr Ravindran said.
“In our last major event, where Y.G.
Mahendra drama troupe visited from overseas,
Mr Wood watched the entire show till late in
the evening. This only reflects his special
appreciation of our Tamil language and culture,
and we thought this time to acknowledge his
support and love with small facilitation,” Mr
Ravindran said.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr Wood said, “It
is great and deeply felt honour for me to be
accepted as a part of your community.
“The time that I have to spend with the Tamil
community, at their events or meeting with the

n a first of its kind, the Auckland Tamil
Association facilitated and bestowed
the Labour MP for Mt Roskill and
Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Minister for
Ethnic Communities, Michael Wood, with the
title Tamil Selvan -“Son of Tamil.”
Auckland Tamil Association hosted their
annual Diwali celebration event, which was
special this year for bringing a well-known
artist Cinni Jayanth from India to perform and
entertain the audience on Saturday, November
17, at Freeman’s Bay Community Centre,
where the facilitation of Mr Wood took place.
The event was well-attended by other
dignitaries including Kiwi-Indian MPs
Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Dr Parmjeet Parmar
and Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Hon. Consul
of India, Bhav Dhillon, along with several
of Human Rights Commission, Bhikhu Bhana
of New Zealand Indian Central Association
and members of Tamil community and the
wider public.
Accepting the award, Mr Wood wowed a
full-house audience by starting his acceptance
speech in the Tamil language – a gesture well
received by one and all in attendance.
“Tamiḻ pārampariyattiṉ pākamāka
iruppataṟku nāṉ mikavum perumaippaṭukiṟēṉ,
Nanri, vannakam,” Mr Wood said in Tamil to
the delight of the audience.
“I am very proud to be part of the Tamil
tradition,” Mr Wood followed English.
Indeed, conferring of the title “Son of Tamil”
to any MP, either Kiwi or Kiwi-Indian is
historic for the Auckland Tamil Association.

Missing woman Sonam Shelar’s

body found at Wairarapa

he body of 26-year-old Sonam
Shelar, who had gone missing
from her residence in Khandallah
in Wellington was found by surfers
on Wairarapa Beach on Wednesday,
November 21.
Police on Thursday, November 22
confirmed the body found at the beach
was of the missing woman Sonam Shelar.
“Formal identification is complete, and
Police can now confirm that it is Sonam,
who was reported missing on Saturday
from Cashmere Avenue, Wellington. The
post-mortem is now complete. However,
we are unable to comment further until Police
receive the results,” Police said in a media
release.
The family of Ms Shelar in India is devastated
with the news after police confirmed finding the
body from the beach.
Ms Shelar was last seen around 8:30 a.m. on
Saturday, November 17, on Cashmere Avenue.
Ms Shelar married Sagar Shelar in December
last year, and moved to New Zealand in April
this year.
Ms Shelar was five-months pregnant and the
couple was expecting their first child together.
Mr Shelar told NZ Herald that his wife went
missing since Saturday after being upset over a
recent ultrasound.
“On November 15, we went for an ultrasound
test at the hospital. She had always dreamed for
a baby boy, but that day after the ultrasound
they were not sure if it was a girl or boy.
“As soon as we got in the car she was crying
and so upset because she wanted a boy,” Mr
Shelar told NZ Herald.
On Saturday, November 17, Mr Shelar went
to work while his wife was still in bed and he
couldn’t find her home when he returned.
Mr Shelar said that he would call his wife
every day at 11 a.m. from work, but she didn’t
answer his calls last Saturday. Ms Shelar’s
phone was switched off which was astonishing
as her mobile was never switched off.
Mr Shelar went home at 1 p.m. and asked the
landlord who said he hadn’t seen her since he
got home at 10 a.m.
“Since that time I have been looking for her
everywhere, and I have no clue where she is.
She hasn’t left a note or anything,” Mr Shelar
had said.

at Nepal Festival in Auckland

ood, music and culture
from the Himalayan state of
Nepal were on full display
in the heart of Auckland city, on
Saturday, November 17, as a part of
the first ever outdoor celebration of
Nepal Festival 2018.
New Zealand Nepal Association
– a premier community organization
that seeks to bring people of all
language, ethnicities from Nepal
together under one umbrella, has
been traditionally hosting an indoor
Nepal festival for the past two
decades, before deciding to take the
festival outside to the wider audience
of New Zealand this year.
The Auckland’s audience, both
Kiwi and ethnic-migrants including
Kiwi-Indians, along with Auckland’s
weather did not disappoint and came
out in full, to support the festival-
goers and international artists
performing at the festival.
So did the dignitaries who turned
up in significant numbers to support
the growing community of the South
Asian nation.
Among them were Auckland’s
Mayor Phil Goff, Minister for
Justice, Andrew Little, Minister for
Ethnic Communities, Jenny Salesa,
Parliamentary Under-Secretary and
Labour MP Michael Wood, Leader
of Opposition and National Party
Leader Simon Bridges, Hon. Consul
of India, Bhav Dhillon.
Several MPs from both sides
including Labour’s Priyanca
Radhakrishnan, and National’s
Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Dr Parmjeet
Parmar, Simeon Brown, Melisa Lee,
were also present on the occasion.
Nepal’s Ambassador to New
Zealand and Australia, Lucky
Sherpa, who is based in Canberra,
travelled to Auckland to represent the
Government of Nepal, and showcase
‘One Country, Many Stories’ – the
theme of the festival.
The pre-event began with a
parade by the members of the
Nepali community holding placards,
banners, with a folk dancer and
musician leading the parade from
Aotea Square to the Customs Street
and back.
By noon, Aotea Square was dotted
by a number of tents holding food
stalls, ethnic dresses and jewellery
corners, sponsor stalls and the most
visited stall hosting the exhibition
of arts and crafts of Nepal called
‘Nepal House’.
The event started with the official
ceremony and welcoming of the
dignitaries with a ceremonial sash
and Nepali cap called ‘Dhaka Topi’.

acknowledged the presence and
support of the guests and stated
the importance of the grand Nepal
Festival as a mean to showcase
Nepal’s rich culture and the
relationship Nepal shares with New

Tenzing Norgay.

The most popular spot at the
Nepal Festival besides the momos
and other food stalls were the ‘Nepal
House’, a booth exhibiting not the
just the beauty of Nepal through
its majestic landscapes captured in
posters but also clothing, jewellery,
arts and crafts of Nepal.
Post official ceremony, a mix
of Nepali folk, rock, Kollywood
music and dance performances
attracted and drew the bystanders
and other city-goers towards the
stage. This was followed by a high-
octane performance by J Geeks, to
which a few members of the crowd
joined the stage and later concluding
the event with the performance
by an international troupe from
Nepal, Kutumba.

very welcoming and energetic
especially when the international
band Kutumba started playing. We
saw not only Nepalese dancing in
the tune of Kutumba, but there were
quite a number of New Zealanders
dancing with the Nepalese visitors.

house which was designed and led by
Madan Shrestha which had an array
of display of Nepalese handicraft,
cultural dresses, and arts,” Joint
Secretary of New Zealand Nepal
Society, Prayash Chhetri told The
Indian Weekender.
“The visitors including young
Nepalese students, NZ born young
Nepalese crowd and other New
Zealanders, especially for the young
Nepalese generation, it was a matter
of pride as an event like these helped
them introduce the Nepalese food,
culture to their Kiwi friends,” Mr

Event in Auckland to commemorate
the birth of Prophet Muhammad

outh Auckland Muslim Association
(SAMA) is organising a commemorative
event to observe the birth of Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh) on Sunday, November 25
at Malaeola Community Centre in Mangere.
Sunni Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad
was born on the 12th day of Rabi’al-awwal, the
third month in the Islamic calendar.
SAMA, like every year, has organised
an event inviting community members,
men, women and children to attend the
commemoration ceremony.
Dignitaries and guests to the event include
National List MPs Kanwalijit Bakshi, Dr
Parmjeet Parmar and FIANZ President Dr
Mustafa Farouk.
Dr Mustafa Farouk, a special guest from the
UK Sheikh Zain-ul Aqtab-Siddiqi, and local
Imams Haji Molvi Abdul Shafeez and Wasim
Malik will also deliver a speech addressing
the significance of the day for the Muslim
community.
Activities at the event include Quran
recitation, welcome address by the president,
Naath recitation by public and SAMA madrasah
students, Salaat-o-Salaam, and dua followed by
Zuhr prayers and lunch.

he Federation of Islamic Associations
of New Zealand recently hosted its
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
in Wellington and announced the new team
leading the activities of the apex body for the
Muslim community in New Zealand.
The first major event hosted by FIANZ was

he 4th Halal Tourism and Hospitality
Tourism was held on Wednesday,
November 21 at Hamilton’s Novotel Tainui
Hotel. The participants will represented travel,
tourism, hospitality businesses, governments
and academics from New Zealand and overseas.
The symposium provided an opportunity to
update, discuss and plan a collaborative effort
in tapping into the growing lucrative halal
tourism market from the Middle East, Malaysia,

first in India (2014) and then recently in
Chicago in September 2018.
The World Hindu Congress is a global
platform for Hindus to connect, share ideas,
inspire one another, and impact the common
good and is held every four years.
The conference includes seven parallel
conferences in a variety of spheres, including
economic, education, media, organisational,
and political, as well as women and youth.

continues to look for ways to take our
hard money out of our pockets.
A recent discussion now proposes to
double the levy charged to Private Training
Establishments (PTE’s).
The ripple effect of such an increase will
without doubt be an increase in the student fees
by PTE’s.
Local student’s fees will be paid by the tax
payer.
This is the Governments way of double
dipping in to our taxes.
Moreover, such an increase will push costs
for international students at a time when New
Zealand’s international education market is
competing against a number of other countries.
We are also likely to see more PTEs going
out of business or staff losing their jobs.
Earlier proposals around post-study work
rights threatened to rip 1,000 jobs and $1.4
billion out of the export education sector.
There is also the recent discussion on
Capitals Gain Tax.
The Labour led coalition Government insists
it set up the Tax Working Group (TWG) ‘to
deliver fairness’ to the tax system.
The TWG admits that a capital gains tax
would see rents increase further.
Perhaps the Government can explain how
adding a tax will help.
New Zealand has record high costs of living
and our rents are amongst the highest in the
world.
They may not accept it however, the
Government’s policy making doesn’t appear to
consider end consequences of its policies that
are driven more by ideology than research and
analysis.
The National Party has consistently said that
a capital gains tax would lead to further rent
increases and hurt those who can least afford it

something the Tax Working Group even
acknowledges. There is growing opposition to
a capital gains tax from sectors as diverse as the
financial markets and farmers.
National believes the New Zealand economy
is in relatively good shape thanks to nine years

This year, 11 teams will play for the T20
championship from six teams last year, with
Kings XI Punjab team defending its title.

with Christchurch Multicultural Council and
delivered the first season in 2017-18 with the
aim to promote cricket amongst ethnically
diverse communities of ChCh, foster friendship
and harmony and to provide opportunities for
immigrants to become members of Christchurch
Cricket clubs and assist with immersion in local
sporting culture.
“We had such fantastic response from
the tournament last year that we had 11
teams register for the tournament, which
is phenomenal,” President of Christchurch

Staff will be set up in malls and hardware
stores to encourage the public to record serial
numbers of recently purchased goods.
“We also encourage people to engrave their
tools or other property with their driver’s license
number, which greatly assists in identifying
the owner of any stolen property recovered by
Police.”
It’s also a chance to get to know your
neighbours, Constable Kumar says.
“We know that burglars often return to
neighbourhoods where they have been
successful, which means they could come back
and try your neighbours.
“Police cannot prevent this type of crime
alone and we rely on the community to report
any suspicious activity to Police.”

hosted an indoor cricket tournament
on Sunday, November 18, at Cobham Oval
in Whangarei to get into the groove for the
ongoing India A & New Zealand A tournament
and create a fever for upcoming India’s Kiwi
tour in January next year.
In a short announcement last week, the
organisers saw four teams register including
one girls’ team. Each team had eight players
between the age of 12 and 15 with two overs
batting per player.
The team names were inspired from Indian
Premier League teams and were named
Whangarei Daredevils, Whangarei Royal
Challengers, Kings VIII Punjab and the girls’
team Whangarei Misfits.
To everyone’s amazement, the girls’
team Whangarei Misfits gave quite a tough
competition to its challenging counterparts and
even won one match. Kings VIII Punjab were
declared winners at the friendly indoor game
private ceremony later this month and will also
get an opportunity to meet the Team A of India
and NZ.
“The idea behind hosting this tournament was
to get the young talents a platform for social

chief Dalbir Singh Suhag

ndian military’s much famed and recently
retired ex-Chief of the Army Staff, General
Dalbir Singh Suhag, visited Australia and
New Zealand in the first week of November.
The General was here to take part in the
Haryana Day event in Melbourne as a keynote
speaker, and in-between was in New Zealand,
first in Queenstown and then in Auckland.
General Suhag gained much popularity, for
it was under his tenure as the commander in
chief that the Indian Army launched two cross-
border strikes, first in Myanmar (2015) and

hosting the General in a public event, which
eventually did not materialise, as they lacked
proper approvals from the General himself,

several high profile members of the Indian
community came together to pay a visit and
listen to him about the heroics of the Indian
military.

celebrating Diwali.

of the Indian community to this beautiful
country,” Mr Bhalla said.

nyone who’s been to the supermarket
lately might feel like they’re spending
the same but leaving with less.
The cost of living is going up and Kiwi
families are feeling it.
This is what happens when a Government
develops policies only with its heart and doesn’t
use its head.
The National Party cares about families and
the household budget. But we know that good
policies that help families come from the head
and heart.
According to Government data, rents went up
$30 a week in the past 12 months, an increase
of $1560 a year. That’s a lot of money.
Under the Labour-led Government rents have
gone up 2.5 times faster than under National.
Prime Minister JacindaArdern told media she
“hopes” that rents won’t increase when letting
fees are banned next month.
“Hope” won’t help a family’s weekly budget.
The Government might have thought it was
being kind getting rid of letting fees, but family
budgets will be hit every single week. It didn’t
think about the true cost.
If property managers can’t charge a one-off
fee, they will raise rents so there’s an ongoing
weekly cost to families.
For the third of New Zealanders who don’t
own their own home these policies are doing
more harm than good.

We don’t believe ‘landlord’ is a dirty word.
There will always be a percentage of the
population who needs to rent and we should
be protecting the rights of both landlords and
tenants.
“Hope” isn’t going to pay your rent or the
bills. This Government needs to start thinking
with its head and its heart before families are hit
in the pocket even more than they already are.
Police remind drivers
to drive safely
following operation

wish to remind drivers to drive safely
following a traffic operation that took
place in the Whakatane area on Monday 19
November.
Police undertook the safe-driving campaign
on State Highway 30, Whakatane targeting the
two roundabouts on SH30 intersecting with
Keepa Road and Gateway Drive, Whakatane.
The campaign was a result of complaints
from members of the public, and Police
observations of poor driving in the area.
In total twenty-six infringement notices were
issued for a number of offences including;
cellphone use, failing to give way at a
roundabout, failing to stay within one’s own
lane and not using seatbelts.
A similar operation was held on the 21st of
August 2018.
In the August operation fifty-five
infringement notices were issued for various
offences at the same location.
Although we are pleased that the number
of infringements is down, this in part can be
attributed to a lower traffic volume.
Our main concerns are drivers who cut
across lanes while negotiating the roundabouts,
resulting in near crashes as drivers exit Keepa
Road, Phoenix Road and Gateway Drive.
We need to work together - please take
responsibility for your driving and reduce the
risk to yourselves and others.
Our message to all road users is clear: Don’t
drive distracted, stay within your own lane,
buckle up, watch your speed, and never drive
under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

I ndia is among the top four nations targeted by phishing attacks, a new report
said on Monday, adding that the country is also among the top hosting
countries for such online frauds, second only to the US.
The other three countries most targeted by phishing are Canada, the US and
the Netherlands, showed research from RSA Security, a Dell Technologies
business that offers business-driven security solutions. 
Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as
usernames, passwords and credit card details via email.
Phishing attacks accounted for 50 per cent of all observed fraud attacks in
the third quarter of 2018, claimed the “RSA Quarterly Fraud Report” for the Q3
2018. In the third quarter, RSA detected 38,196 total fraud attacks worldwide.
The overall phishing volume in Q3 increased 70 per cent from Q2.
GSAT-29 satellite pushed higher into

of ISRO on Saturday. Speaking to
the media, Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K. Sivan said: “The GSat-29 satellite orbit was
raised successfully. There will be no more orbit raising activity. The satellite
will drift gently to its final position.” He said the satellite’s antennas were
deployed.
“Everything is fine with the satellite,” said a happy sounding Sivan.
India, Nepal agree to set up
hotline for effective coordination in
checking smuggling

ndia and Nepal have decided to set up a hotline to ensure effective
coordination between them to check smuggling, officials said Wednesday.
In a meeting, various matters of mutual cooperation were discussed with the
chief of India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, D P Dash and Director
General, Customs, Nepal, Toyam Raya, they said.
The two top officials had met in Kathmandu on Monday and Tuesday for the
19th annual Indo-Nepal Director General-level talks, the officials said.
Both sides discussed measures to increase cooperation along the borders to
combat smuggling, improve border management and facilitate trade, they said.
They also agreed to establish a hotline between the two countries for effective
coordination, the officials said.

he cyclone Gaja, which is expected
to make landfall in coastal areas of
Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
on November 14, means elephant in

Gaja will be the second cyclone to hit the
coastal area in a month after Cyclone Titli
wreaked havoc in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh
on October 11, killing a total of 70 people.
The severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds
of 175 km per hour, uprooted thousands of
electricity and telecommunication poles,
devastated coconut and cashew orchards, and
flattened standing crops.
Cyclones are named by various warning
centres to provide ease of communication
between forecasters and the general public.
The names are intended to reduce confusion
in the event of concurrent storms in the
same basin.
Generally once storms produce sustained
wind speeds of more than 61 km/h names are
assigned in order from predetermined lists
depending on which basin they originate.
In South East Asia, cyclones are named
by different countries. Titli was named by
Pakistan and Gaja by Sri Lanka..

How are cyclones named? 
During World War II, tropical cyclones were
informally given women’s names by US Army
Air Corp and Navy meteorologists (after their
girlfriends or wives) who were monitoring and
forecasting tropical cyclones over the Pacific.
• From 1950 to 1952, tropical cyclones of
the North Atlantic Ocean were identified by
the phonetic alphabet (Able-Baker-Charlie-
etc.), but in 1953 the US Weather Bureau
switched to women’s names.
• In 1979, the World Meteorological
Organization and the US National Weather
Service (NWS) switched to a list of names
that also included men’s names.
• The Northeast Pacific basin tropical
cyclones were named using women’s
names starting in 1959 for storms near
Hawaii and in 1960 for the remainder of
the Northeast Pacific basin. In 1978, both
men’s and women’s names were utilised.
• The Northwest Pacific basin tropical
cyclones were given women’s names
officially starting in 1945 and men’s names
were also included beginning in 1979.
• The Southwest Indian Ocean tropical
cyclones were first named during the
1960/1961 season.
• The Australian and South Pacific region
(east of 90E, south of the equator) started
giving women’s names to the storms in
1964 and both men’s and women’s names
in 1974/1975.
• The North Indian Ocean region tropical
cyclones are being named since October
2004.
Names reused every six years
• Atlantic and Pacific storm names are reused
every six years, but are retired “if a storm is
so deadly or costly that the future use of the
name would be insensitive or confusing”,
according to forecasters at the US National
Hurricane Center in Miami.
• Hurricane Sandy was the 77th name to be
retired from the Atlantic list since 1954. It
will be replaced with “Sara” beginning in
2018, when the list from 2012 is repeated.

most destructive hurricane of the 2012
Atlantic hurricane season that hit the US
last year.

A wholemeal flat-bread cooked in a traditional clay oven
S
omewhere between a Naan and a Roti lies the
Tandoori Roti. It is considered to be the result of
two cooking techniques gone awry. Unlike Naan,
Tandoori Roti can be made on a tawa (griddle-pan) and
unlike Roti, it is thicker. It is made with wholemeal flour
and the dough is not fermented.
Preparation Time: 05min
Resting Time: 15 min
Cooking Time: 15min / Servces: 4
INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups maida (wholemeal flour) 1/2 cup warm water,
as required
METHOD
• Place flour in a bowl. Add water to the flour, a little at
a time, while kneading to form a soft dough (you may
not need all the water). Cover with a damp tea towel
and leave it to rest for at least 15 minutes.
• Pinch off a large golf ball sized piece of dough and roll
it into a ball, then flatten between your palms. Use a
rolling pin to roll it out to a 12-14cm circle. Flour your
work surface or rolling board while rolling so that your
Roti does not stick. Make sure that it’s not too thin –
Tandoori Roti is bit thicker than a regular Roti.
STOVETOP METHOD
• With your pastry brush (or your hand), spread water
evenly on one side of the Roti. Place the Roti, damp
side down on a hot tawa. As soon as the roti heats up
you will see bubbles form on it; let it cook for about a
minute on medium heat.
• Then hold the tawa upside down directly over the flame
• (since the dough is sticked on the tawa it will not fall
down. Use tong to flip the tawa if it dose not have a
handle).
• Cook the roti by tilting and moving the tawa untill its
charred on a medium heat then flip the tawa back on
the flame and cook the roti for another few seconds.
TANDOOR METHOD
• If you have clay oven (tandoor) in your house, then by
all means make your Tandoori Roti in it, to enjoy the

right for young children and
reset government policy in the
interests of high quality teaching and
learning” said Clare Wells, Chief
Executive NZ Kindergartens.
“The government’s determination
to ensure the provision of high
quality early childhood education
(ECE) unique to Aotearoa, is to be
applauded.”
The Minister of Education
released the draft ECE strategic
plan today which sets out a series of
recommendations to lift the quality
of ECE services through improved
adult:child ratios and a requirement
for 100% qualified and well-
supported teaching workforce, to
improve the planning of new services
and strengthen monitoring of all
services, and to increase investment
in community-based, public ECE.
Increasing numbers of children
are spending longer periods of time
in ECE services independent of their
parents and caregivers. “Improving
ratios for our very youngest children
in ECE settings is long overdue” said
Clare Wells.
“We welcome the goal to improve
not only the numbers of adults to
children in a centre but also the
qualifications of those adults.”
Central to the plan is lifting the bar
on the numbers of qualified teachers
in ECE services over time. “The
kindergarten service is committed to
100% qualified teaching workforce
and we welcome government policy
supporting teacher-led education and
care services to reach that same goal”
Clare Wells said.
“However, funding to services
already employing 100% qualified
teachers must be increased if we
are to retain and grow a qualified
teaching workforce.” The hourly
funding rate to kindergartens
employing all qualified teachers is
less than it was 10 years ago. “We
expect increased funding in the
2019 budget will be one of the first
steps towards realising government’s
quality goals for the sector”.
The government invests around
$1.8 billion in ECE alongside
a significant investment from
whānau, families and communities
contributing fees and donations. “We
welcome greater accountability for
the receipt and use of public funding”
Clare Wells said.
“It’s absolutely right that the
government should set conditions
for the receipt of funding and lift
expectations of ECE providers”
Clare Wells said. “We agree every
ECE service should ensure an
optimum learning environment
for children, focus on high quality
teaching, and provide greater support
to teachers and kaiako through better
pay and employment conditions
and professional learning and
development (PLD) opportunities.”
“The success of the plan will rely on
the timely implementation of policies
and while some may take some years
to achieve, others such as improving
ratios, regulating qualifications,
improving employment conditions,
and planning service provision
cannot wait” said Clare Wells.
“It is untenable to think we would
create the same situation as was the
case for the 10 year plan developed
in 2002, which was never fully
implemented because a change of
government in 2008 resulted in
funding and the policy targets being
cut.”
The development of this strategic
plan is one of a number of pieces
of work being undertaken by the
Ministry of Education to ensure a
strong future for education. “One in

to have a slow reading rate,
according to researchers.
The chronic dry eye is a common
disease in which natural tears fail to
adequately lubricate the eyes, thus
drastically affecting its functioning.
The study found that the condition
can slow a person's reading speed by
as much as 10 per cent and can make
it difficult to read for more than an
average of 30 minutes.
Those with clinically significant
dry eye could read fewer words per
minute -- 32 words per minute less
-- than those without the condition,
who read at the same rate of 272
words per minute.
"We suspected that people with
dry eye were mostly unable to sustain
good reading performance because
their tears cannot re-lubricate their
eye surfaces fast enough," said Esen
Akpek, from the Johns Hopkins
Wilmer Eye Institute in the US.
For the study, published in the
journal Optometry and Vision
Science, the team included 186
adults aged 50 or older.

relationships are more likely to
intervene when they witness bullying
or other aggressive behaviour at school and to
step in if they see victims planning to retaliate,
suggests new research. The findings, published
in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence,
found that kids who were already excluded, or
discriminated against by peers or teachers, were
less likely to stand up for victims of bullying.
"There is a lot of research on bullying, but
very little on the extent to which family factors
affect whether bystanders will intervene if they
see bullying," said study lead author Kelly Lynn
Mulvey, Assistant Professor at North Carolina
State University in the US.
Peer interventions are very effective at
stopping bullying and preventing future
aggressive behaviours. However, these
interventions are fairly rare, according to
Mulvey. For the study, the team examined
450 sixth grade students and 446 ninth grade
students who completed a survey aimed at
collecting data on their relationships with
family, peers and teachers. They were also
given six scenarios, each of which dealt with
a specific aggressive act -- physical aggression,
cyberbullying, social exclusion, or rejection
by a group, intimate partner violence, social
aggression, such as teasing or mean-spirited
gossip, and exclusion by a former friend.
For each scenario, students were asked to
rate the aggressive act on a six-point scale, from
"really not OK" (1) to "really OK" (6). Students
used the same scale to judge the acceptability of
intervening.The results showed that the stronger
a student reported 'good family management,'
or positive family relationships, the more likely
a student was to deem aggressive behaviour and
retaliation unacceptable, and the more likely
they were to intervene in either case.
"The study tells us that both home and school
factors are important for recognising bullying
behaviour as inappropriate and taking steps to
intervene. It highlights the value of positive
school environments and good teachers, and the
importance of family support, when it comes to
addressing bullying," Mulvey noted.

ndia’s second-biggest city is a daily festival of human

n Friday, November 23, the
world will celebrate 549th
birth anniversary of Sri Guru
Nanak Dev, the first of the Sikh
Gurus and the founder of Sikhism.
The teachings of Sikhism, also
called ‘Gurbani’, highlight the
principle of equality and denies
any discrimination based on caste,
religion or gender. In Guru Nanak
Dev’s words, “Truth is higher than
anything else, higher still is truthful
living.”
A Sikh is expected to give away
his ego while leading a truthful
family life, share his earnings with
the less fortunate work for personal
and social development. He gave the
world the mantra of “Ek Onkar” –
one God and taught the principles on
oneness that are true to this day.
With Guru Nanak Dev ji’s birth
anniversary just around the corner,
we pay tribute to one of the world’s
most energetic clan - the Sikhs.
The ten Sikh gurus have been
enlightening the path for not
only Sikhs but countless others,
over generations. Their teachings
have been followed by different
communities worldwide.
With Guru Nanak Dev being
the first Guru of Sikhism, he was
succeeded by Guru Angad Dev, Guru
Amardas, Guru Ramdas, Guru Arjan
Dev, Guru Hargobind, Guru Har Rai,
Guru Harkishan, Guru Tegh Bahadur
and Guru Gobind Singh who was the
10th guru of Sikhism.
He then declared Guru Granth
Sahib the ultimate and eternal Sikh
guru. In his words "sab Sikhan ko
hukam hai, guru maanyo granth”
(Everyone is advised to lear n, as
now Guru Granth Sahib will be the
successor guru for all).
About Guru Nanak Dev’s life:
Guru Sahib was born in 1469 at
Rai Bhoeki Talwandi which is now
known as Nankana Sahib and is in
Pakistan.
Son of an accountant Mehta Kalu
and Mata Tripta, Guru Sahib had an
older sister, Bibi Nanki who was also
the first disciple of Guru Nanak.
There are several popular tales
from his young life.
During his school, he explained
the alphabets in terms of realisation
of truth about god and humans. He
was believed to be sent to different
schools to study Hindu and Muslim
scripture.
But his messages to the world were
above all scriptural knowledge. In his
words, he explains that whatever he
says comes to him from God.
O Lalo!
As comes the Divine Word from
God to me,
So do I narrate it. (TilangMohalla
1, p-722)
I am saying what He commandeth

p-566)
At the age of nine, his family
persuaded him for the sacred

Legends of Shiva.
Four shows are planned between December
7-9, at Dorothy Winstone Centre, Freeman’s
Bay, Auckland, with single ticket for adults
and children priced at $25 and a group of four
tickets at $80.

Any theatrical depiction around Lord Shiva
is expected to lit-up the minds and hearts of the
audience, given that Lord Shiva holds a unique
place within the famous Trimurti concept of
Hinduism, symbolising with both – being a
destroyer and a transformer.
Rarely does any other deity across any
other religion around the world could claim
to be representative of extreme forms of life
– birth and destruction – together, as would
Lord Shiva.
Therefore, Auckland’s audience of this
theatrical production can fully expect to be
illuminated by The Legends of Shiva.
Projected as one of the biggest, if not the
biggest local Indian productions, especially by
those who are in the know of the production
process, one can expect mesmerising
combination of music, sounds and lights from
the dance drama show.
The Indian Weekender team that has visited
few rehearsals of the dance drama show had
noted that there were more than 100 people
involved in the cast and the crew of The
Legends of Shiva.
Also noteworthy is the fact that the show is
fully conceived and produced by the youth of
Chinmaya Mission New Zealand, who all fall
in less than 29-year age bracket.
