A. Topic: ASEAN Economy

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), established initially by five

countries in Southeast Asia, has overcome a number of crises through its history,
including the communization of Indochina, a civil war in Cambodia, the end of the
Cold War and the Asian currency crisis. With membership now having expanded to
10 countries encompassing almost all of Southeast Asia, ASEAN has positioned itself
at the center of the regional architecture and succeeded in exerting considerable
influence over the peace and prosperity of East Asia. The Association has been
seeking Southeast Asian integration, announcing the establishment of the ASEAN
Community, the first regional community in Asia, in December 2015. These
achievements are all noteworthy. Yet the future is hardly smooth sailing for ASEAN.

The potential of destabilizing political and security factors to adversely affect the
progress of integration within the ASEAN region is one of the issue confronting the
bloc. The ASEAN Charter talks of so-called universal values, such as the
development of democracy, the protection of human rights, the establishment of the
rule of law, and good governance. These values were regarded as indispensable for
stabilizing the political situation in member countries for the long term, and preparing
to attract overseas investment, even if democratization and human rights weren’t quite
where they needed to be.

Unfortunately, the region has been going backwards in democratization and human
rights. In Thailand, the military regime is attempting to extend its power. In Cambodia,
the long-term government of Hun Sen is working to stay in power by attacking
opposition parties and the media. Democratization of Myanmar has far to go. The
government there under Aung San Suu Kyi has been widely criticized for its failure to
protect the Rohingya people, who have been subjected to rampant human rights
violations. In Indonesia, a country where secularism is assumed to have been the
governing rule, identity politics linked with Muslim and other religious values is
growing, undermining the stability of Indonesian politics and society. Xenophobic
nationalism and terrorist attacks by religious extremists (not limited to Islamic
extremists) occur frequently within ASEAN, and cast a dark shadow over the stability
of the bloc and the entire region.

Is growth can be created through regionalism? What are the advantages and
disadvantages of it?

Critically analyse the above statement and provide the analysis on the impact of the
issue faced by the specific ASEAN country member of your choice, in terms of its
economy, overall.

Further requirements:

The issue on growth should be clearly defined and compared between ASEAN
countries and statistical justifications such as GDP, BOP, human development index,
population size, etc. are expected to be analysed.

In addition, the issues above should be expanded to the latest information on the
current situation and its relations to the growth of the selected ASEAN countries.

The social impact and its relation to human productivity, environment, as well may be
ideal to be discussed to support the arguments.

B. THE REQUIREMENTS

A written essay of approximately 2,500 words that evaluates economic and strategic
issues from the topic above.

E. MARK DISTRIBUTION FOR ASSIGNMENT

The mark allocation for the assignment will be as follows:

 40 % of the mark will be allocated for Acquisition of knowledge/application of

concepts/ research material and evidence of original thinking.
 45% of the marks will be allocated for Quality of argument/reasoning; the depth
of analysis; expansion of ideas/argument and recognition of wider
context/complexity of topic
 15 % of the marks will be allocated for overall quality.

You will be assessed at 100% for this Assignment and the marks will be weighted at 50% for the
overall marks for this module.

F. ASSIGNMENT ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The criteria below detail the areas, which will be taken into account when the
assignment is marked. Each piece of assessed work will be awarded a percentage
between 0 and 100%. The grades awarded will be marked according to the
following criteria:

75% + This would be equivalent to a Distinction and would represent

outstanding performance. The work should show a thorough
understanding of the issue together with a high degree of analysis and
critical evaluation.

65 – 74% This will be equivalent to a Credit. This would represent extremely

good work demonstrating an in depth understanding of material and
sound analysis and conclusions.

50 – 64% This would be equivalent to a Pass. Work in this category should

demonstrate good application of the main Principles to the question set
and provide a well-balanced view.

49 – 0% This would represent a failure to pass demonstrating a poor command

of the knowledge of subject area combined with an inability to
interpret the question.

Please pay particular attention to the following:

including the appendices.
 Page numbering: Ensure that the contents page accurately reflects the position of
