LESSON TOPIC: Day Nine: Solving Compound Inequalities

Standards: A-REI.B.3
Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable,
including equations with coefficients represented by letters.

Learning Targets: I will be able to understand the difference between “and”

and “or” when solving compound inequalities. I will be able
to apply previously learned skills when it comes to solving
inequalities to compound inequalities.

OVERVIEW I will start class by presenting a couple of word problems

for warm ups. These problems will focus on the important
of “and” and “or” when it comes to compound inequalities as
well highlight how math is applied and used in the real
world. I will give students to work on these problems
together within their groups, then we will discuss the
problems and work on connecting our previously learned
skills into solving compound inequalities.

Introduction/ Warm up problems:

Explicit Instruction/
Strategies #1: A restaurant charges $10 for seniors 60 years old or
older and for children under the age of 12. Others have to
pay $20. Write two inequalities to represent the ages that
will only pay $20.
Answer: x>12 and x<60, 12<x<60

#2: The average top number (systolic) blood pressure for an

adult is between 120 and 140. The normal range for the
bottom number (diastolic) is between 80 and 90.
a) Write two inequalities to represent the top number
(systolic)
i) Answer: 120<x<140, x>120 and x<140
b) Write two inequalities to represent the bottom
number (dialostic)
i) Answer: 80<x<90, x>80 and x<90
Discuss the students solutions and review the warm up
problems together.

Exit Slip problem:

#1: The velocity of an object thrown directly upward is

given by the equation V = 100 - 32t where t is in seconds. At
what time is the velocity between 36 and 62 feet per
second? At what time will they velocity be less that 36 or
greater than 62 feet per second?

METHODS I will present the warm questions and make students think
about how they can create two different inequalities and
introduce them to the concept of compound inequalities. I
will also be focusing on real world application problems so
that students can connect inequalities to real life situations
and examples.

ASSESSMENT: Warm up problem, exit slip, and homework assignment

MODIFICATIONS: I can provide a worksheet with guiding problems to further

break down the composition of compound function, this will
help students that need extra help with understanding
inequalities and compound inequalities extra steps to put
their own inequalities together.

ADAPTATIONS/ Provide enlarged copies, describe instructions and

ACCOMMODATIONS vocabulary loud and clear, create notes sheets with
examples solved out for students to follow. Create
stress-free learning environment for those with math
anxiety. Check up on students with learning disabilities
frequently to see if they are on track with the rest of the
class.

HOMEWORK: Students will need to complete the exit slip before class
ends but will then have the rest of the class period, if there
is extra time, on the homework assignment worksheet.
MATERIALS: Whiteboard, writing utensil, paper

TECHNOLOGY: Projector - if available - to present the notes
