Manners and Kindness in Islam
The definition of Manners in Islam originates from an Arabic word ( )اخالقor
( )أدبwith the literal meaning of morals and manners. It is commonly spoken
about in the Quran and is stressed on by the prophets. Being a good role
model and character is highly emphasised in Islam as we look up to the
prophets and try to be at the best of our ability. We can see this in the
following hadith:
We are taught about manners from a young age and how to act. In which some
are from Islam, for instance take in consideration the story of this women.
Once a man came to rasoullah and reported “O Messenger of Allah (PBUH),
there is a lady who is known for performing a lot of prayers, fasting and charity
however she harms her neighbours by her tongue, so the messenger replied by
said she will be sent to hellfire. This hadith also states and shows the
significance of this point:
اح ِش َو ََل ْالبَذِي ِء
ِ َان َو ََل ْال ف ِ َّس ْال ُم ؤْ ِم ُن بِالطَّع
ِ َّان َو ََل اللَّع َ لي ى
"The believer does not taunt others, he does not curse others, he does not
use profanity, and he does not abuse others."
We can fix our characters by coming back to our religion and our roots, if we
look at what the Quran has stated and what the prophet preached then we can
be educated and influenced. There are also many rewards of installing a good
character in yourself like: pleasing Allah, getting closer to the Prophet (PBUH)
on the day of judgment, Allah will reward you in your life time or in the
hereafter. In the following verse in Surat al Baqarah helps us to understand:
َّللاِ َو ََل ت ُ ْلقُوا بِأ َ ْيدِي ُك ْم إِلَى الت ه ْهلُ َك ِة ۛ َوأ َ ْح ِسنُوا ۛ إِ هن ه
