Grade(s): 7th

Subject(s): Mathematics

Length of Lesson: 45 minutes

Lesson Overview/Rationale:

Students will able to use variables to represent unknown numbers in a real-world problem, design an
equation and solve it. Students will be divided in groups of three.

Learning Objectives:
● Students will identify unknown quantities and represent them using variables.
● Students will create an equation using the given information and solve for it.

Technology Uses:
● Projector
● PowerPoint software
● Aleks software

Materials:
● Worksheets
● Pencils

Procedure:
● Teacher will use the PowerPoint presentation to teach the lesson.
● Teacher will hand in a worksheet with four exercises to solve.
● Teacher will do one exercise with the students and then divide then into groups of three.
● One student will find the unknown quantities and represent them with variables.
● One student will write an equation using the given information.
● One student will solve for the answer.
● Each student will do a different step on each one of the three exercises.

● Give students homework on the website Aleks.

Assessment:
● Teacher will go around the room looking at the worksheets to make sure students are following
the steps to solve the real-world problems, if they’re getting the right answers and working
together. When students are done, the teacher will collect one worksheet from each group.
