Critic Paper: ART OF QUESTIONING

Introduction
People begin asking questions almost as early as they begin to speak. Question solicit
information for the purpose of understanding something. Everyday questions are different from the
questions effective teachers ask, because effective teachers formulate questions with an eyes to
increasing someone else’s understanding something. Everyday questions are different from the
questions effective teachers ask, because effective teachers formulate questions with an eye to
increasing someone else’s understanding. Questions designed to drill of rote answer require little
art; but questions that help teach students how to think are like a dance between the teacher and
student.

Skill in the art of questioning is a must for teachers. Questions are used to motivate, to
instruct, and to evaluate. Careful use of questions insures direction and success and the learning
atmosphere in the classroom. Through the skillful art of questioning, teachers should enable the
students to use ideas rather simply remember them.

Questioning skills are not just about being aware of the different kinds of questions it’s
possible to ask. The real skill in questioning is knowing how to use the different kinds of questions.
Being aware of how questions can complement each other, but this is not as simple as it sounds. It
needs practice before the skills can really be developed.

There are three opportunities to pose pedagogical questions for the students: before the
class, during the class. Questions before a class provide framework that will orient the student in
advance to what is important in the assignment. Questions during class give the teacher an
indication of how well students understand: and classroom questions also give the student the
opportunity to ask the teacher clarifying question. Reflective questions that require no immediate
answer, but are designed to get students thinking more deeply about the topic, and even to
question their own assumption, can be asked at the end of the class.
Critique
Questions like these would surely make someone think. To pose a question is one of the
best tool of teacher should always have on hand. Asking questions is an art itself. We can detect
how good teacher is in his ability to ask good and thought-provoking questions. Effective teachers
throw question at their pupils to test how wide and deep in their analysis on a certain topic. This
serves as a gauge of a pupil’s capacity and to get their feedback.

Questions have a lot of advantages.

1. They stimulate the pupils to think. As the teacher asks questions, he is convincing the
pupils to become attentive to letting them formulate their answer and ideas quickly.

2. They motivate pupils. Questions can make the pupils enthusiastic about the lesson.

3. They serve as the means to diagnose a pupil’s difficulties. Teacher can easily detect
what is the particular weakness of the pupil. By not answering question or giving wrong
answers, the pupil show that he has difficulty grasping the concept of what was
previously taught to him.

4. They help to develop the pupil’s ability to evaluate and organize materials or
experiences.

5. They help discovering the pupil’s interest.

6. They help the pupils to relate experiences pertinent to the lesson.

7. They focus pupil attention on the key points of the lesson. Question contain the most
important points which should be imbibed by the children’s mind.

8. They help to develop new appreciation and attitudes. Questions can encourage the
children to value the lesson and change their attitudes after a realization of how they
are compared to a certain thing found in the question.

9. They provide drill of practice. When the children get to use to raising questions, they
can reduce their shyness and build up their confidence.
10. They show relationship and such so cause and effect.

What Makes Questions So Powerful?

So what questions do we ask, and what drives them? Sometimes we ask straight
forward questions, which are relatively easy to answer. At other times, we ask more
searching questions which are challenging to answer. The kind of questions we ask will lead
us certain direction. If we limit the scope of our questions, then we will often be limited in
the kind of answer we seek or find.

Asking questions is an art itself. We can detect how good a teacher is in his ability to
ask good and thought-provoking questions. There are kinds of questions then are effective
in achieving these. Good questions have some characteristics such as: simplicity and clarity,
definiteness and thought- provoking, adapted to the age, abilities and interest of the
students and lastly require an extended response.

There are some techniques that involve in art of questioning. Teachers and parents
who want to maximize the use of questions in teaching children should know the practice
these techniques. First, questions should be asked in a well-modulated voice. They should
not be loud because they irritate ears. They should also be clear, audible, and easy to
understand. After questioning, one should first wait for the class or pupils to process the
question in their minds, think about their answers, and the call a student to answer the
question. A teacher should give a chance for the students to think. This will enable them to
be alert. Questions should be asked to stimulate students to activity. There should not be
too many question questions so the students could focus on an answer or set of answers.
Avoid also repeating questions. This will result in boredom and inattentiveness of a
students. Questions should not be thrown at a selected person. Everyone should be
encouraged to participate in class discussions. Teacher should avoid calling students
alphabetically or row by row. It is that questions that are interesting and thought-provoking
should be asked by the teacher.
Conclusions
Skill in the art of questioning is a must for teachers. Questions used to motivate, to
instruct, and to evaluate. Careful use of questions insures direction and success in the
leaning atmosphere in the classroom. Through the skillful art of questioning, the teachers
should enable the students to use ideas, rather than simply remember them. Question also,
both oral and written, exert a major influence upon the learners. As a teacher, we should
therefore, be concerned about our questioning skill. We can lead our learners to all kinds of
thinking through careful and skillful questioning.

Through questioning may lead of a proper conversation. We share information and

ideas with others. We learn about other people and places. We acquire new ideas,
assimilate information, broaden our horizon and develop broader outlook. A good
conversationalist must know how to give and take he should develop a virtue of humility,
must pay attention and should have a ready ear to listen every words that may come from
others. Therefore, the most basic function of communication is not giving information but
establishing relationship with another. The quality of relationship will depend a great deal
on the ability of a person to express himself verbally.

Asking questions is one of the best listening tactics. You have to formulate a
thoughtful question which requires you to stay engaged. It keeps you in mindset of learning
instead of automatic judgement. Plus, it validates your conversation partner because if did
not care, you have a bothered to ask.
