CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS
I. INTRODUCTION

Pumps are necessary components inside an oil drilling rig. They’re designed to
accelerate the transference of fluid from one location to another. Without pumps,
refineries cannot operate, as oil displacement is essential to an oil rig’s entire operation.

The most common

type of pump found in the oil
and gas industry is
undoubtedly the centrifugal
pump. Centrifugal pumps
contain one or more
impellers that move fluid by
rotation and draw fluid into
the suction end of the pump
and then, through
centrifugal force, forces it

This design allows the
pumps to be used for a wide range of applications and are preferred for processes that
handle low viscosity liquids and high flow rates. Centrifugal pumps can also handle dirty
liquids or liquids with low viscosity as long as they do not contain air, vapors, or heavy
amount of solids.

Centrifugal pumps are also used in the upstream oil and gas industry as part of tri-
phase or multiphase pumping application. In addition, these pumps serve a wide variety
of applications with many types such as electric submersible pumps, which are used as a
water and oil separator in which water can be re-injected into a reservoir without lifting it
to the ground surface. They can transport a significant amount of low viscosity liquids in
a short period and can pump several hundred gallons of liquid per minute if the product
is compatible.

II. WORKING PRINCIPLE

These pumps work on a very simple mechanism. A centrifugal pump converts

rotational energy, often from a motor, to energy in a moving fluid.

The two main parts that are
responsible for the conversion of
energy are the impeller and the casing.
The impeller is the rotating part of the
pump and the casing is the airtight
passage which surrounds the impeller.
In a centrifugal pump, fluid enters into
the casing, falls on the impeller blades
at the eye of the impeller, and is
whirled tangentially and radially
outward until it leaves the impeller
into the diffuser part of the casing.
While passing through the impeller,
the fluid is gaining both velocity and
pressure.

Owing to the use in the diverse

range of applications, pumps come
with different capacities and in various Figure 2: Parts and how the fluids flow inside a
sizes. You should also consider the centrifugal pump.
pressure and volume requirements of
the specific operations for which you need the pump. The horsepower required is another
important consideration when it comes to volume and discharge pressure.

III. APPLICATION IN THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

As mentioned above, centrifugal pumps play an important role in the drilling

and/or circulation system. Starting from the movement of the mud, and slurry, pumping
crude oil in production facilities as used by refineries, and in transportation of fuel to
power generation plants in offshore oil rigs.

A common use for a centrifugal pump in the oil and gas industry is for the control
of the flow of fluids to the trip tank from its source (connected through a flow line). A
miniature of this set up best demonstrates the capability of the centrifugal pump.

IV. METHODOLOGY

A. Materials used

 Sintra board  Soldering iron and soldering wire

 Zonrox bottle (small)  2 plastic containers
 Gatsby wax canister (small)  Scissors/Cutter
 Plastic tube (solid)  2 different colored wire
 Epoxy  Super glue
 12V Motor  Spray paint (any desired colors)
 Potentiometer  Transparent hose
 Syringe

B. Procedures

For the motor:

1. Cut out the cover in the center of the circle and make a hole equal to the diameter
of the motor shaft. In our case, 3 mm.
2. Cut blade impeller. Stick to the disk. A ring on the blades were added to increase
the stiffness of the impeller.
3. Cut off the syringe at an angle and then slightly rounded scalpel for a snug fit to
the curve of the banks. Stick to the hot melt adhesive. Then superglue to glue
engine.
4. In the cover to make a hole for water intake ¼ inches in diameter and glue gun.
5. On the side to make a cut out for the syringe.
6. drop of superglue to the center of the impeller and fit onto the motor shaft. Drip
a little glue for a better setting.
7. On the inside of the lid cause hot melt and stick to the bottom of the jars.
8. Solder the wires to the engine and tie them in a knot.
9. Glue the motor housing to the pump casing, using hot melt glue. Place it carefully.
10. Seal the hole exit wire using hot glue.
11. The pump is ready.

For the miniature trip tanks:

1. Spray paint the 2 containers with 2 different desired color.

2. While waiting for the containers to dry, cut the Zonrox bottle at its bottom part
and its upper part. Keep the bottom part for later.

3. Cut strips of the Sintra board having the dimensions 4.5x0.2 cm (13 pcs) and 2.5x0.2
cm (3 pcs) Glue the strips to the zonrox bottle.
4. Create a small box using the sintra board (2.5x1.5x2 cm) And using a soldering iron,
create two holes for the wires of the motor at one side.
5. Do a curve at the bottom of the box to glue it to the surface of the zonrox bottle.
6. After the bottle dries up insert the motor and set up the wires exiting at the two
holes of the small box.
7. Once it is set, close the back part by sealing it with the bottom part of the Zonrox
bottle.
8. Spray the Zonrox bottle with the desired color.
9. Cut 2 rectangles (3x5.5 cm) from a sintra board for the legs of the Zonrox bottle.
10. Create a semi-circle at the rectangles that would fit the Zonrox bottle. Once it fits,
spray it with desired color.
11. With the motor body and 2 containers ready, arrange the following as shown in
Figure A.
