Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario

Miguel Grau Seminario, also known as “The Knight of the Seas” is one of
the greatest navy heroes in Peruvian history. He fought in the War of the Pacific
against Chile (1879- 1884), and it was his acts of bravery, daring and the respect
for his enemies that gave him popularity in our country.

He was born on July 27th 1834 in Piura, in the north of Peru. His parents
were Juan Manuel Grau Berrio and Luisa Seminario del Castillo. He lived in this
city all his childhood and when he grew up, he moved to Lima to entered the
Peruvian Navy at the age of 19. Soon, he was recognized as an exceptional young
seaman and rose fast in the ranks of Peruvian Navy. He traveled a lot in these
years and was recalled for the War of the Pacific.

When Chile declared war on Peru, Grau was named commandant of his ship, the
Huascar and promoted to Rear Admiral, obtaining the overall command of the
Peruvian Navy. He accepted knowing that Chile had better ships, guns and
weapons of war in general. At first, the war took place in land, but rapidly this was
disputed on sea where Grau was successful in some battles, sinking and capturing
Chilean ships, but he took care to rescue survivors as the famous case of
Esmeralda, where he saved the life of a lot of Chilean soldiers.

On October 1879, the Huascar was sunk and Grau was killed in the battle with his
crew, but he fought with bravery until the end.

Miguel Grau has a place in every Peruvian heart. He taught us not to giving
up, have respect even for our enemies, and love our country, because he gave his
life for this. He is a symbol of bravery, courage, and that's why he is maybe the
greatest hero in our history.
