Observation Task 6: Different learning styles and


differentiation
Focus: On a higher-level learner.
Objective: For student teachers to gain an initial understanding of how learners are different.
Procedure:
1. Ask the teacher to help you choose a higher-level learner in the class.
2. Observe the learners all day and make notes on a schedule (see below).
3. After the observation answer:
• How many different activities did the learner do?
They do four different activities.
• How did s/he interact with the other learners throughout the day?
He interacts with learner extremely good, and he played with them.
• What was the longest period of time the learner spent focusing on one
activity?
He spends 5 minutes and above.
• What did the learner do during the break times?
He was following the teachers more and playing less. That doesn’t mean he
doesn’t play, he plays, but he Stays next to other teachers more.
• What did the learner’s attention span / interest during activities seem
like?
He gets interested at the beginning of the activity, but slightly he gets
bored.
• What did the learner seem to like doing the most / least during the day?
He was playing with toys and goofing around. Plus, he likes to play freely.

Observation Task 6: Record sheet - A day in the life of a higher level learner
Follow a learner for a day and write down the activities and movements in the table
below.
Name: Henry David Age: 4 years old Level: A higher level
Brief description: Henry is the tallest boy in the class. He has short black hair. White
skin. He looks a bit Asian. He is a talkative person who never stops from talking. He is
smart, but he is naughty at the same time.

Reflection
The following question may guide your response:

 What was the same or different about the two learners?


Henry focuses in class and interacts with the teacher very well, but he is naughty,
but Saleh is quiet, and he doesn’t speak or communicates much.
 What did you notice that relates to the theories we have been discussing?
His linguist development is good, he is a native speaker in English, but he also gets
the Arabic word easily.
The physical development, he plays and moves a lot.
Cognitive development, He can solve and answer the question that are at a higher
level.
 What interested or surprised you?
What surprised me that, he is so smart, but why he has such bad behavior?
What interested me. Henry always helps his classmate.
