U.S. Employment Trends Report
September 2010
Contents
Executive Summary
Key highlights from this month’s report p. 1
About
Information on the Report and Simply Hired p. 14
• Healthcare and legal job opportunities. Healthcare and legal job openings are substantial
despite little or no industry growth. While the healthcare industry posted only a 3.4%
increase, hospitals were top employers across all 25 major metros. The legal industry
posted a -4.8% decrease in jobs, but legal occupations grew by 18.6%, indicating that there
is a demand for legal workers outside of law firms.
• Increase in finance hiring. Job openings for financial specialists and accountants increased
by 53.7% from last month. This uptick coincides with the traditional fall recruiting season
for major banks, accounting, consulting and investing firms.
• Healthy job market in Boston. Of the four least competitive job markets, Boston was the
only one that also had substantial job growth for the month (11.1%), making it overall one of
the best places for job seekers. The other three least competitive metros all had less than
5% job growth.
• Huge increase in demand for retail workers. Job openings for retail salespersons
went up 104.1% between August and September. This doubling of jobs is a sign of early
seasonal hiring, as retail stores prepare for increased business over the holiday season
(October through January).

• Best and worst job markets. Baltimore, Boston, Washington, D.C. and West Palm Beach are the
least competitive metros, each with a 1:1 unemployment ratio. Major metros in California and
Florida are some of the most competitive, with 4-6 unemployed persons for every job opening.

• Increased demand for legal workers. Up 18.6%, legal occupations had the third largest growth in
September, after retail (104.1%) and financial (53.7%) jobs. The increase in legal hiring marks the
beginning of an expansion expected to continue through year end.
• Strong hiring by IBM and Yum! Brands. IBM and Yum! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut) were
two of the top nationwide hiring companies for the month (see U.S. Job Market Snapshot). Their
presence in 24 of 25 metros indicates their hiring is widespread, not concentrated in select areas.
• Jobs at universities. Atlanta, Boston, Houston, New York, Pittsburgh, Portland, Seattle and
Washington, D.C. all counted a university in their top five employers. Job seekers should consider
opportunities at universities, especially if there is a private, not public, one in their area.

The U.S. Employment Trends Report is a monthly summary and analysis of employment
trends in the United States. These findings are based on monthly job seeker activity
on SimplyHired.com, which aggregates millions of listings from over 30,000 employ-
ment sites, and data obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some findings may be
projected from recent historical data. Data may not be representative of all industries,
occupations and/or metro areas. “Metropolitan Areas” in this report are the 50 most
populous in the U.S., as ranked by the Nielsen Company’s Designated Market Area (DMA)
list. “Occupation Categories” are derived from the Department of Labor’s O*NET database.
With more than seven million job listings worldwide, Simply Hired (www.SimplyHired.com)
is the world’s largest job search engine and recruitment advertising network. The company
powers jobs on over 10,000 network partner sites, and operates global sites in 21 countries
and ten languages on six continents. Simply Hired has raised $22.3 million in funding from
