Tips for Parents
1. Make sure you can see
your children when they
are online.
2. Talk to your children about
which sites are appropriate
to go on.
3. Talk to your children about
not sharing personal
information.
4. Know your child’s
passwords and usernames.
5. Check your child’s phone
daily.
6. Install filtering software.
7. Understand the programs
your children use.
8. Clear your children’s
browser history.
9. Make sure your children
use privacy settings.
Potential Dangers of
the Internet
As social media and internet use are becoming a
bigger part of our kid’s daily lives caution is
necessary. Previous generations did not grow up
with these kinds of technological advancements
and therefore may not be aware of the potential
dangers and threats that come with internet use.
There are hackers, scammers, traffickers, and
bullies in the online world. Many people create
fake profiles and target children from online.
They offer them love or support and slowly real
them in. This is a serious matter that we all need
to be aware of. Hackers try to get information
any way they can, by creating fake games, adds,
or even a fake email accounts. If your children
aren’t aware of these things, they may be in
danger. Talk to your children now! Be safe!
CYBERBULLYING
Make sure your child is aware that cyberbullying is
real and can happen to anyone. According to a
Teens Health article by Elana Pearl Cyber bullying
is “the use of technology to harass, threaten,
embarrass, or target another person” (Pearl). Even
sharing pictures online of people in attempts to
make fun of them is considered cyber bullying.
Bullying is usually unanimous and done purposefully.
It is not an accident. If your child is getting repeated
mean messages from someone, and you aren’t sure
if they intended it to be harmful or not, it is always
best to report it. Report to school and/or local
authorities as this is a serious matter that is not taken
lightly. Cyber bullying can lead to serious problems
in the victim. They may become anxious, depressed
or experience other negative emotions. It is also
important to make sure your child is careful of what
they say online as people are more apt to speak
their mind online. This may lead to cyber bullying. If
cyber bullying is to occur, make sure your child
blocks them immediately. You might also consider
creating a new account for your child if bullying
occurred on a social media site. It is also important
for your child to know the signs of cyber bullying
and that they feel comfortable enough talking to
you about it.
