Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the impact of lead pollution to the environment and human
being. The highest lead exposure is in lead melting section at battery factories. A few
symptoms of lead toxicity includes whitish or bloody vomit, tensed abdominal wall,
constipation, black faeces, headache, vertigo, and seizures. To diagnose lead intoxication,
chemical test, which is lead concentration in urine and blood can be done. In lead intoxicated
patient, lead concentration in urine is usually more than 0,08 mg/L and more than 0,8 mg/L
in blood. Therapy for lead toxicity includes breathing resuscitation, mouth rinse, give
stimulus to vomit, symptomatic therapy and chelating agent therapy. Even when lead
intoxication can be treated, safety measure to prevent lead intoxication is mandatory. To
prevent lead intoxication, employer can provide proper training and sufficient information
for employee to ensure safer work environment. Standard personal protective equipment
(PPE) should be provided and the quality should be tested adequately. Besides, work
environment evaluation in various conditions which is physical, chemical, biological and
ergonomic condition should also be done.
