REFLECTION: MANILA RISING POPULATION

MANILA (Reuters) - The Philippines’ population has grown over two percent each year
since 2000, the government said on Thursday, but experts said Asia’s biggest Catholic
nation was unlikely to change policies to slow the increase.

The country has one of the highest population growth rates in the region, with at least
three babies born every minute. Its population reached 88.57 million at a census in
August last year, up from 76.5 million in 2000.

Health
Rapid human population growth has a lot of outcome. Population grows fastest in the
world’s poorest countries. A lack of basic needs results in physical weakness and poor
health. Poor health decreases the ability of the poor to work and put them deeper into
poverty. Overpopulation and poverty have long been associated with increased death,
and disease.

Instead of allowing poverty to persist, it is important to limit our number because in

dense populations too- many lack adequate food, water, shelter, education and
employment. High fertility, which has been traditionally associated with prosperity,
prestige, and security for the future, now jeopardizes chances for many to achieve
health and security. on the other hand, these factors can also affect the growth of the
population in some other ways possible.

Due to many improvements in the field of medicine, many diseases and illness are
cured. Sickness that used to be a threat to human are now curable. These
improvements in the field of medicine affected the mortality rate of the Philippines.
Medicine that can cure specific sickness are now available to people. Lowering the
mortality rate increases the population.

Education and health awareness of people makes people heathy and fit. They are less
prone of sickness. They are concerned of their life and health. They tend to do things
that can keep them healthy. Being healthy and fit also lowers the mortality rate since
health concerned people are less likely to be sick and die.

Food Security

It is hard for me to tell if they have enough food to support their daily life in such areas
like that but while watching the documentary I can say that they don’t have that much

food, maybe because they are a lot on their family and Father or Parents don’t have a
job or stable job to sustain their daily needs. Personally, speaking I experience that kind
of thing, when I was in Tondo. And I cannot blame the government or any of those
people who live there for being poor or having a bad government official in our country
because that’s life.

Socio-Economic

Increasing Unemployment Rate, I don’t get it when almost of the company here in our
country always look for possible workers with 4 years of experience. And I’ve watched
some interview about fresh graduate who look for a job and the fresh graduate said, “its
hard to find a job because they are depending on experience”. Did the company get it?
The main reason why the fresh graduate wants to apply because of they want to have
an experience, that’s why they are called fresh graduate? Why our country is so like
this? That is the reason why have a bad growth.

Water Resource

Perennially, Metro Manila and its adjacent cities have counted on water from the various
dams around it. So, whenever there is a drought, the danger level goes up. And
whenever there is too much— the capital sinks and drowns.

Technological solutions
There are several technology solutions that could be used. First there is drip irrigation
for irrigation. Second, treating of waste water so it could be drunk several times over is
a way to conserve water.
Then there is Desalination, which isn’t new technology but has been around for
years. It is the same technology used in US Aircraft carriers to provide water for the
crew (because it could work in tandem with a nuclear reactor).

Environmental

The Philippines' evident risk to natural disasters is due to its location. Being a country
that lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is prone to earthquake and volcanic eruptions. In
addition, the country is surrounded by large bodies of water and faces the Pacific Ocean

where 60% of the world's typhoons are made. One of the most devastating typhoons
that hit the Philippines in 2013 was Typhoon Haiyan, or "Yolanda", that killed over
10,000 people and destroyed over a trillion pesos worth of properties and damage to
various sectors. Other environmental problems that the country is facing include
pollution, illegal mining and logging, deforestation, dynamite fishing, landslides, coastal
erosion, wildlife extinction, global warming and climate change.

Overall

We live in one country, so let us all make change to make our country better not just by
the support of the government also by the support and help of you.
