2.3.1. Scope
This specification shall apply to all piping systems designed for Andes Petroleum Company
in Tarapoa Block. The pressure-temperature limitations for the piping specifications shall
correspond to the pressure-temperature limitations of the flange series as specified in Table I
and its supplement unless otherwise specified.
All piping systems and elements of such systems and the assembly, installation and testing
of such elements and systems shall, where applicable, be equal to, or exceed, the minimum
requirements as specified by the latest revisions of the following codes and regulations:
(a) American National Standard Code for Pressure Piping ANSI B31.2 or B31.3 as
applicable, latest revision.
(b) American National Standard Code for Steel Pipe Flanges, Flanged Valves and
Fittings ANSI Series B16, latest revision.
(c) ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division I & II, latest
revision.
2.3.3. Inspection
All piping systems shall be inspected and tested in accordance with the applicable codes and
standards, plus any supplementary requirements listed in this piping specification.
Andes Petroleum Company reserves the right to accept or reject any piping not meeting the
requirements of the Ecuador DNH.
Design and operating conditions of all piping covered by this specification will be
given in the piping material specification sheets. Where operating conditions are

specified the mechanical, thermal, and material design shall be in accordance with
the criteria specified in the following clauses of this specification.
The design pressure of all piping covered by this specification shall be the greater of
that specified in the piping material specification sheets as the design pressure of 200
kPa greater than the maximum operating pressure, except in special cases approved
by the Designer Representative.
The design temperature of all piping covered by this specification shall be the greater
of that specified in the piping material specification sheets as the design temperature
or at least 16ºC above the maximum operating temperature. For piping in cold
temperature service the design temperature shall be the lesser of that specified in the
piping material specification sheets as the design temperature, or 3ºC below the
minimum operating temperature except in special cases approved by the Designer
Representative.

2.3.4.4. Materials
Except under special conditions of severity, hazard, etc., the materials used in piping
systems under this specification shall be in accordance with the Piping
Specifications, which are based on the design pressure and temperature and on the
type of service.
The materials used under special conditions of severity and hazard must be suitable
for the particular service conditions involved, and must be approved by Designer
representative and Andes Petroleum Company. before fabrication.
The corrosion allowance to be added to the wall thickness of the pipe and other
piping materials in normal or “sweet gas” service is 1.6mm (1/16 inches) or 1/8
inches for all piping unless other specified.

Piping systems for use in sour service, as defined by the Standards listed shall
conform to these piping specifications plus the supplemental sour service
specifications outlined in Section 2.3.15.
2.3.5. Welding
a. All welding performed under this specification shall meet or exceed the requirements
of the latest editions of any and all applicable codes, standards and/or governmental
regulations having jurisdiction.
b. Contractor must submit to Andes Petroleum Company all welding procedures, which
are required by the applicable codes, standards and/or government regulations, to
perform the work. All welding procedures submitted to Andes Petroleum Company
must be fully approved and registered with the government of the province in which
the facility is located. Andes Petroleum Company reserves the right to accept or reject
welding procedures.
c. No welder shall be allowed to make welds unless he has passed tests under the
appropriate procedure(s) and thereby is qualified to weld in the province in which the
work shall be performed. Contractor shall be fully responsible for and bear the full
cost for, replacement of any welds made by unqualified welders.
d. Acceptability of welds and defects shall be governed by the latest revision of the
piping system code.
e. Andes Petroleum Company or an appointed representative thereof shall judge the
acceptability of all welds. Any defects shall be repaired at the expense of the
Contractor.
a. All welded construction is preferred wherever practical. Threaded piping for process
lines shall be limited to liquid process, drain, fuel and instrument lines; and shall be
increased to nominal 60mm (2”) pipe size for all long runs or where the line exits from
any building, unless approved by Andes Petroleum Company authorized
representative.
b. The minimum pipe size shall be 27mm (¾”) except for instrument air, water or team
tracing and for reduction at instruments having less than 27mm (¾”) connections.
Nominal pipe sizes 73mm (2½”), 102mm (4½”), and 141mm (5”) shall not be used
except for short connections to equipment furnished with connections in these sizes.
c. All piping shall be installed in a neat workmanlike manner, properly guided and
supported as indicated in the drawings.
d. Each pipe joint or length shall be thoroughly swabbed to remove all dirt and foreign
matter from inside of the pipe before the joints are connected. Any obstructions or

foreign matter remaining in the pipe after installation thereof shall be removed at the
sole expense of the Contractor.
e. The pipe is to be run true to vertical, horizontal to the axis of the building or skid in
such a way that it is pleasing to the eye, unless the type of installation demands a slope
in the pipe in which case the slope is to remain constant along the length of the pipe.
f. No “stub-ins” or “half-collar” branch connections will be allowed, unless indicated on
the drawings. Appropriate tees, weldolets, and threadolets shall be used in all other
cases, as directed with Section 5 of these Specifications.
g. Piping at equipment such as pumps, compressors, turbines, etc., shall be arranged so
that such equipment may be maintained or removed without dismantling adjacent
equipment or piping.
h. Piping in such service shall be arranged as close to grade level as practical. Overhead
piping is not allowed on rotating equipment unless specifically approved by Designer
and Andes Petroleum Company.
i. Changes in length of lines from temperature effects shall be calculated and adequate
allowance made for expansion and contraction, preferably by use of expansion offsets.
Anchors and guides shall be provided to keep the pipe in alignment to properly direct
the resultant stresses and strains.
j. The assembly of piping shall be performed so as to impose the least possible
mechanical stress.
k. Piping shall be grouped and arranged in a neat and simple manner giving ample room
for fire access to all operating equipment. All piping shall run N-S and E-W direction
with sufficient spacing to allow maintenance of equipment.
l. Below grade piping inside concrete floor buildings shall be placed in concrete trenches
covered with open grating with trench drains to the drain system. All such drains shall
be equipped with traps. Fire walls shall be provided where required. For installations
where solid trench covers may be required instead of open gratings, such installations
shall be adequately sealed, drained and vented.
m. Overhead lines in process area shall have 8’-0” clearance from bottom of pipe to
ground level.
n. When installing eccentric reducers on pump suction, keep flat side up.
o. All drain piping shall be supplied with adequate cleanout connections.
p. Thread lubrication shall not be used on screwed fittings to be seal welded.
2.3.7. Spooling
a. All prespooled piping sections shall be fabricated and tested in accordance with this
piping specification, the applicable piping material specification sheets, and the
approved for construction spool drawings.
b. All flange bolt holes shall straddle radial or vertical centerlines.
c. All prespooled piping shall be accurately fabricated in accordance with the drawings.
Maximum tolerance on spooled piping shall be ±3mm in all directions.
d. After final hydrostatic test, each prespooled length shall be dried and cleaned of all
grease, scale, rust and debris and all open ends shall be protected by suitable covers
prior to shipment.

2.3.8. Fittings
2.3.9. Valves
a. Lubricated plug valves shall not be used at temperatures above 175ºC or in front of
metering equipment.
b. Gate valves shall not be used at temperatures below –45ºC.
c. Cast iron, semi-steel or ductile iron valves may be used in low pressure water or air
service only when outside of process buildings or outside of process areas.
d. No operating valves shall be installed 200cm or more above floor or platform or
other point of easy access unless approved by Designer and Andes Petroleum
Company. Any valves installed more than 200cm above access shall be equipped
with operators. Valves shall not be installed in overhead product outlets from
vessels or where the cold side of heat exchangers could be trapped full of liquid,
unless absolutely required by operation. Block valves, when required, shall be
installed at nozzles to permit the operation of valves from grade level or from a
platform. Equipment shall be capable of being isolated if:
e. Depressurizing associated facilities will delay maintenance on the equipment.
f. Ball valves must be fire safe in hydrocarbon liquid or vapour service.
g. Block valves on pump suctions shall be at least one size larger than the pump suction
nozzle except on installations where adequate net positive suction head conditions
are assured.
h. Manually operated gear operators shall be provided as follows:
i. 150 and 300 lb.
• Plug valves 168mm (6”) and larger
• Butterfly valves 219mm (8”) and larger
• Ball valves 219mm (8”) and larger
• Gate valves 324mm (12”) and larger

a. Process control valves and vapor control valves shall be flanged. Liquid dump valves
may be screwed if flow conditions permit.
b. All control valve stations shall be equipped with block valves up and downstream of
the control valve. All control valve stations 114mm (4”) and larger shall have two
27mm (3/4”) vent valves to permit isolation and bleed of the control valve.
c. All control valves shall have a single bypass valve to permit manual system control
during valve repairs.
d. Block valves may be ball, plug or gate valves as the service conditions require and
shall be the same size as the inlet line to the control valve station.
e. Unless otherwise specified, bypass valves shall be globe valves through the 114mm
(4”) size, and gate valves in larger sizes; and shall have at least equal capacity of, but
not more than one and one half times that of, the control valve.
f. Sufficient clearance on the axis of the valve stem shall be provided, in all cases, to
permit removal of actuator and stem without removing valve body from the line.
Clearance below a flanged valve assembly shall be twice the nominal size of the pipe
run, however in no case should clearance below flanged or screwed assemblies be less
than 100mm (4”).
g. Reducers shall be eccentric and installed directly before and after control valve.
h. Unions shall be installed between block valves and control valves in all screwed piping
applications.
i. All threaded or socket weld drains or bleed valves shall have a nipple inserted to
prevent thread corrosion, complete with a threaded end connection.
a. Vent and drain connections shall be supplied at all high and low points and shall be a
minimum size of 27mm (3/4”), at a minimum of 200mm (8”) above grade.
b. Valve vent and drain connections shall be provided where required for operation, e.g.
vessels, pumps, turbines. Connections not normally used shall be plugged or blind
flanged.

a. Prior to initial operation, installed piping shall be pressure tested to assure tightness.
In the event repairs or additions are made following the test, the affected piping shall
be retested. In the case of minor repairs or additions, the Owner may waive retest
requirements, or may request alternate methods of determining the “soundness” of
fabrication.
b. Inspection and testing shall be in accordance with the requirements of the applicable
code as set forth in Section 2.0 of this Specification and with Dominion and Provincial
regulations concerning piping systems.
c. All piping other than open drain lines, sewers, and air lines less than 21mm (1/2”) shall
be pressure tested.

a. All liquid sulfur piping shall be insulated and heat traced or jacketed.
b. All flanged connections shall have two couplings installed in the jackets as close to the
flanges as possible on flange centerline.
c. All piping bends shall be made with welded crosses installed complete with flanges for
cleaning.
d. All runs of pipe shall contain sufficient number of breakout flanges and all laterals
shall be connected to mains through pipe crosses with flanges on connecting ends of
laterals, and flanges and blinds on opposite sides.
e. Sufficient connections for steaming, blowing and draining shall be supplied on all
sulfur lines.
f. All liquid sulfur lines shall be sloped to sulfur pit and shall be drainable.
2.3.15.1. Scope
All sour service piping shall be designated with an “S” after the piping group
designation as shown in the piping material index.
This Specification shall be used in conjunction with the General Specifications for
piping whenever the operating pressure is 345 kPa (50 psig) or greater and the gas or
liquid to be handled in the process piping system contains:
(a) Gas & Vapour Lines - 0.5 mol percent hydrogen
sulphide or 69 kPa (10 psi)
partial pressure H2S, or
whichever is less.

a. All pipe material used in sour gas shall be in accordance with the applicable
piping material index unless an alternate is approved in writing by Andes
Petroleum Company.
b. All piping material used in sour service shall exhibit the following chemical
properties, in addition to the requirements of the piping material index:
2.3.15.3. Fittings
All fittings shall be manufactured in accordance with the grade shown on the piping
material index and the supplemental chemical properties shown in Section 2.3.15.2.2.
2.3.15.3.1. Identification
i) Hot stamping (with the part above 620ºC) with rounded die impression.
ii) Cold stamping with rounded die impression prior to a final heat treatment.
iii) Cold stamping with rounded die impressions on the outer rim of the flange.
2.3.15.4. Valves
a. All valves for sour gas or sour liquid service shall meet the latest NACE
Specification.

b. The use of “O” rings in valves, instruments and equipment intended for sour
service shall be minimized. If used, they shall be fabricated from Teflon or
Viton A.
2.3.15.5. Bolting
a. All special nuts and bolts to be used in sour service shall have distinct
permanent identifications of the material specified in the piping material
index.
b. Bolting of piping and equipment shall be by torque wrench or other approved
method which will ensure closure without cold working of bolts. Impact
tightening shall not be allowed except by special approval.

2.3.15.6. Gaskets
All gaskets in sour service shall be flexitallic up to 600# ANSI and oval ring
900# and over. Salt water service shall be flexitallic gaskets. Gasket to have
an I.D. equal to the I.D. of Sch. 40 pipe.
2.3.15.7. Affidavits
a. All pipe and fittings in sour service shall have 3.2mm (.125”) corrosion
allowance added to the wall thickness unless otherwise specified. This shall
be added to the calculated allowable thickness.
b. No threaded connections shall be permitted in sour gas process piping, except
for secondary lines such as instrument leads, etc., downstream of block valves
which are flanged and connected by weld fittings to primary lines.
c. All welds on ANSI 300# class or higher in piping systems in sour service
shall be 100 percent stress relieved and x-rayed by the Contractor. In addition,
any welding on ANSI 600# sour piping shall be stress relieved, i.e. pipe shoes
secured to the pipe by welding, etc. The Rockwell hardness of weld, parent
metal and heat affected zones shall not exceed HRC 22. Affidavits of stress
relieving, x-ray film inspection and hardness test shall be supplied to the
Owner.

a) Weld-o-lets, tees, used for branch connections shall meet the rating requirements of the
applicable piping specification.

c) Steel couplings, when used for branch connections, shall meet the rating requirements
of the applicable piping specifications, and in any event, shall not be less than 3000#.
d) In sour service, 600# ANSI and higher, weld-o-lets will substitute couplings or TOL's.
