Mary McLeod Bethune
An incredible African-American educator and civil rights activist,
Mary McLeod was born on July 10, 1875 in the rural area of Maysville, South Carolina.
For many years after the end of slavery, Maria's family continued to work as
sharecroppers on the plantation of former teacher William McLeod until they could
afford to build a farm.
Despite her freedom, Patsy still washed clothes for her former owner and Mary often
He accompanied his mother to deliver the wash.
Parents could afford to send only one child, and Mary was chosen to become the first
member of your family to attend school. This opportunity would change Mary's life, she
taught her family everything she had learned that day at school; where I study four years
and graduated at the age of eleven.
Passionate about women's rights and civil rights, Bethune served as president of the
National Association of Women of Color and founded the National Council of Black
Women Women.
On May 18, 1955, Mary McLeod Bethune, 79, died of a heart attack and was buried on
the grounds of her beloved school. A simple marker says: "Mother".
