i. TW say: A very famous scientist, Carl Sagan once said, ““You have to
know the past to understand the present.” Today we are going to focus on
a volcano eruption from the past to try to better understand why it is
important to learn to study volcanoes and how studying past events can
help the future.
b. Development Activities or Learning Experience:
i. Review Key Details from I Survived
1. Remind students that it is a fictional text. Today we will be reading
a nonfiction text. This text is interesting because it is illustrated
with cartoon characters and the TEXT STRUCTURE is formated
differently than other nonfiction text we have read.
ii. Read Aloud: You Wouldn’t Want to Live in Pompeii
1. In Depth look at the timeline
a. Use sequence signal words
2. Post Read: Fill out “Who, What, When, Where, Why and How”
chart on the whiteboard.
3. Past Tense
a. When do we use it? Why do we use it?
b. Brainstorm past tense words.

2. To better understand what the person in the video was speaking of
and the damage it caused we are going to watch this video. While
watching, I want you to pay attention to the effects that this
volcano had and imagine how you would feel if you lived during
this time.
