Part I:
Directions: With a partner use the following questions as a starting point to learn a little bit about each other. Write at least ten
contrasting characteristics in each partner’s circle. Then write at least five common characteristics in the middle of the Venn
Diagram.

Conversation Questions: What is your favorite color? What is your favorite type of food? Where were you born? How long have
you lived in Charlottesville? What is your favorite subject in school? Do you play any sports? Where did you go to elementary school?
If you could have one superpower, what would it be? What’s your favorite animal? Do you have any pets? How many pets do you
have? How many siblings do you have? How many brothers? Sisters?

Part II:
Directions: After you have completed your Venn Diagram, write two sentences about you and your partner. The first sentence must
be a comparison sentence, showing something that you have in common. . The second sentence must be a contrasting sentence,
showing something that is different about you. . Choose one “signal word” to use in each of your sentences from the list below. You
and your partner should have the same sentences written down. Remember Ms. Short and Ms. Wetzel’s examples if you get stuck.

Signal Words: Words that show us the author is comparing and/or contrasting two ideas.
