STEP Standard 3 - Assessment and Data Literacy

Pre-Assessment - Copy and paste the pre-assessment you plan to use to assess the students’
knowledge of the topic prior to implementing the unit lessons. Include the scoring criteria used
to determine whether the student Exceeds, Meets, Approaches, or Falls Far Below the learning
goal and measurable objectives.
I am going to place the preassessment for this assignment in my bell work. Over the past couple
of weeks, we have been doing individual work about oceanographers for bell work I am going to
see what they know, I am than going to check over this bell work on Wednesday and compare it
with the test I give at the end of the week.

Pre-Assessment Data: Whole Class - Once you have assessed your students’ knowledge on the topic,
collect and analyze the pre-assessment data to determine if you will need to modify the standards,
learning goal, or measurable objectives that will be addressed during instruction.

Pre-Assessment Analysis: Whole Class

I am going to make a lot of things in this standard hands on because with this class I have found
that this is the best way to make things stick.
I have a lot of things that I do during my planning specifically with this class. As shown in my
observation I am going to have them create their own sea animal and use this to create a note taking
device. In this way I will be able to engrain something in their minds and because they are using more
parts of the brain it will make this easier. Instead of starting the class off with a lecture I am going to start
with this activity which should get their minds started and going. I believe that because of this it will
appeal to a wider variety of thoughts. I also think I will be able to easily test knowledge by the sticky
notes the students will place on an anchor chart at the end of the period.
Post-Assessment – Copy and paste the post-assessment you plan to use to assess the students’ knowledge
of the topic after implementing the unit lessons. The post-assessment can be the same as the pre-
assessment, a modified version, or something comparable that measures the same concepts. Include the
scoring criteria used to determine whether the student Exceeds, Meets, Approaches, or Falls Far Below the
learning goal and measurable objectives.
This is where the post assessment comes in, I have an anchor chart where I have drawn a picture
of the ocean and will ask the student to write a fact or two they have learned about the ocean on a
sticky note and then place this sticky note on the anchor chart with their name on it. This way I
can understand what they know about the ocean.
