is nothing if you are making loss and if you are efficient but not effective than it’s also a loss,
you will lose the quality of your product. We focus on both, efficiency and effectiveness. Being a
multinational company, we are responsible for the health of people so we don’t compromise on
the quality, you can call it effectiveness but we try our level best to produce that quality on the
lowest cost. But yes maybe effectiveness comes first than efficiency.
MANAGERIAL LEVELS:

INCREASING IMPORTANCE OF CUSTOMERS:

(Supporting patients & consumers)

Our ability to create life-enhancing and life-preserving products is constantly bolstered by

scientific advances, but delivering on our commitment to patients and consumers goes well
beyond the laboratory. To deliver safe and effective products - at the right time and in the right
dosage or formulation - we work to educate patients and health care professionals about potential
risks and side effects. All medicines, health care interventions, procedures and products carry
some degree of risk - which must be balanced against the often greater risks associated with the
illnesses or injuries these interventions are designed to treat. Fully educating and informing our
stakeholders about these risks and benefits is paramount. Along with educating patients and
health care professionals about the safe use of our products, we work hard to ensure safety and
consumer protection throughout the manufacturing and distribution process. The safety of many
product ingredients is generating significant debate throughout the health care industry. At the
same time, the broad geographic dispersion of our supply chain requires increased oversight and
auditing.

Our obligation to protect patients and consumers goes beyond simply complying with regulatory
requirements. It means earning and keeping the trust of all those who depend on our products by:

• Ensuring quality, safety and product integrity across the full spectrum of research, development
and manufacturing of our products and packaging.

• Ensuring the quality, safety and authenticity of each product that bears the Abbott name
through our distribution channels.

• Effectively identifying and targeting the most appropriate patient profiles for each Abbott
product and ensuring that health care professionals are fully informed of the benefits and risks of
our products.

• Directly and indirectly educating patients about proper storage, use and disposal of their
medicines and health care products under appropriate medical supervision.

As a leader in global health care, Abbott’s goal is to create and develop products that preserve
and enhance the lives of patients and consumers.

INNOVATION:
Using our core strength as an innovator to make a difference to the health and well-being of
people everywhere

Scientific discovery and innovation are the hallmarks of Abbott’s business – and the core of our
commitment to advancing health and well – being. Our broad scientific expertise enables us to
create new health care products, carry them through the critical stages of development and then
deliver them to patients and health care providers around the world. Our diverse portfolio of
pharmaceuticals, nutrition, medical and diagnostic devices share a common framework of
excellence in science, research, development and engineering.

With increasing awareness and demands, we will continue to run ICH-GCP (International
Conference on Harmonization Good Clinical Practices) complaint clinical trials with the highest
ethical standards to demonstrate clinical effectiveness and with robust Pharmacovigilance system
to establish the safety of Abbott products with our consumers. This in turn will ensure
availability of health care solutions for doctors and highest quality products for patients.

Abbott’s fundamental purpose is helping people get healthy and stay healthy, at all stages of life.
Our total focus is towards helping people to live their best lives. With the best possible
healthcare solutions, we strive for making a difference and enriching the lives of people in our
country. Offering a broad range of innovative solutions, our presence is felt in the market.

CONTEMPORARY ORGANIZATION:
Abbott Pakistan Limited is definitely a contemporary organization. We have a very flexible and
dynamic structure here. We easily adopt changes in order to accomplish our goals. Our main
requirement is skilled employees who must be beneficial for our organization. While making
decisions our employees feel free to participate. We value our employee’s words. We have
workforce diversity. Work is done on a very diverse scale where different types of employees
work under one roof on similar goals.

CONTINGENCY APPROACH:
In contingency planning it depends what resource we have. We can focus on production side. For
instance in case of floods comes, water gets unhygienic and by that people suffer from various
illnesses like diarrhea. During this period demands of our products increases rapidly. In that
condition we have to change our product line. For that our contingency planning is that we do
certain level of forecasting. In Pakistan during monsoon season when it is obvious that floods
will come in certain urban areas we keep our stock levels high. We try to have at least 3-4
months stock available so in case of sudden demand we are well prepared.

HENRI FAYOL’S 14 PRINCIPLES:

1) DIVISION OF WORK:
In Abbott work is divided in different departments. Each department has unique tasks to
perform. Sales department plans how to enhance the sales of the products, manufacturing
department is concerned with the assembling of the commodities. HR is responsible for
hiring credible employees.
2) AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY:
In this organization authority comes hand in hand with responsibility. Managers have all
the authority to give commands to the lower employees but side by side it is their
responsibility to motivate, evaluate and coach the staff. The higher authority they get
more responsibility comes on their shoulders.
3) DISCIPLINE:
It is fundamental principle to have disciplined environment. There are some strict rules
and polices which are mandatory to be followed. Employees here respect the system here
and obey the commands.

4) UNITY OF COMMAND:
All the senior managers get commands from the CEO. Each department has one
supervisor who commands the employees to do various tasks. Sales manager will not
command the labor force to make anti-allergies or finance manager will not hire or fire
the employees. Unity of command avoids conflicts and confusion in our organization.
5) UNITY OF DIRECTION:
During the production of Mospel mosquito repellent and the employees were directed
towards its manufacturing, transportation, sales etc., respective of their departments. All
the units of the organization move towards the same objective through coordinated and
focused efforts.
6) SUBORDINATION OF INDIVIDUAL INTEREST TO GENERAL INTEREST:
At the time of welcoming new employees in Abbott, special trainings take place where
employees are taught to have company’s interest on top level. Our top priority is to
provide healthy products to improve the quality of life of our customers.
7) RENUMERATION:
Remuneration system in Abbott is great. We pay attractive salaries and retained the right
people and be sufficiently high to motivate employees. Along with the monthly salaries,
3.5% bonus is given to the employees annually.
8)

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR:
Basis is power with managerial assimilation of ascendancy (authority). Those who are in
authority must have the ability to demand.

Abbott Laboratory gets benefits by using this model when it approaches to guide managerial
behavior when there were no well-known alternatives.

Abbott also uses this model under some supreme situations such as organizational disaster.

DECISION MAKING:
We have a separate department where decision making takes place. We do production planning
for our respective product over there.

EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT:
There are two kinds of external environment, uncontrollable factors and controllable factors.
Nobody can handle uncontrollable factors because you never know what is coming next but we
plan accordingly to stand across the factors which can be controlled. For example we deduct few
days from 365 days to be well prepared in case of strikes or law and order situations. We always
have arrangements to face external environment. Safeguarding the environment, playing our part
in addressing the global challenges of climate change and water scarcity while minimizing the
environmental impacts of our products.

LEARNING ORGANIZATION:
Managers at Abbott formed learning groups that helped them strengthen their leadership abilities
by exchanging frank feedback and developing strong mutual trust. A r i s i n g f r o m t h e focus
in driving a holistic capability program, over 300 training programs were delivered through
classrooms. World saw a significant amount of sharing of Abbott best practices in building
functional expertise through Global Learning Academies. Abbott introduced an “e-
learning” platform which offers a bouquet of 3000 courses on a self -learning mode via computer
and internet. These programs can be accessed by a Abbott employee anywhere in the world, at
any time. The employees need to be given bigger and challenging roles to strengthen the
environment for personal growth. Different learning programs help the employee in developing
multidimensional personality.

SYMBOLIC VIEW:
Managers are considered as the symbol of perfection. If any uncertainty occurs the external
factors are considered to be responsible for that situational occurrence of lack of sureness.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE:
All Abbott employees are expected to avoid personal activities and financial interests which
could conflict with their responsibilities to the company, employees must not seek gain for
themselves or others through misuse of their positions. Everyone take responsibility of their own
work. We have stretched goals here so make smart objectives to work on those goals.

ability to move ahead with the company, the attitudes of supervisors are positive. For example,

problem-solving attitude, resulting in rapid advancement.
