Definition of Terms.

Absolute humidity: It is the mass of water vapour contained by unit mass of air.

Absorbance: Measures how much of an incident light is absorbed when it travels

in a material. If all the light is absorbed, then percent transmittance

is zero, and absorption is infinite.

Angle of incidence: the angle that a line (such as a ray of light) falling on a surface or

interface makes with the normal drawn at the point of incidence.

Axial fan: It is a type of fan with high impedance from back pressure. This

contains a circular impeller within an enclosed cage. This design

allows axial blower fans to create directed airflow under high

pressure conditions. In this study, the axial fan blows/pushes air in

to the collector to be heated throughout the drying system.

Convective Solar Dryer: This is a type of solar dryer that uses the natural vertical convection

that occurs when air is heated. The working principle of natural

convective solar dryer is, once the air in the solar dryer is heated by

solar energy, the air relative humidity will drop and float up through

the drying.

Drying: In this study, drying is a method to preserve fish by removing its

moisture content that inhibits the growth of microorganisms.

Drying rate: In this study, it is the rate of removal of moisture or solvent from the

interior of the fish being dried.

Fin-type Solar Collector: It is a solar thermal collector that collects heat by absorbing sunlight.

In this study, cuts of galvanized iron sheet are used for the fins which

are placed inside the channels of the collector to increase the heat

transfer.

Humidity: It is the measure of the water content of the air inside the drying

system.

Open sun drying: In sun drying, produce is exposed directly to solar radiation and -

more or less effectively- to the wind.

Pony Fish (Leiognathidae): The design of this study was based on this type of fish. This type

comes from small family of fishes in the order Perciformes. These

are small and laterally compressed in shape, with a bland, silvery

colouration. They are distinguished by highly extensible mouths,

and the presence of a mechanism for lacking the spines in the dorsal

and anal fins.

Psychrometry: It is the calculation of relative humidity and water-vapor pressures

from temperature and barometric pressure.

Reflection coefficient: It is a parameter that describes how much of an electromagnetic

wave is reflected by an impedance discontinuity in the transmission

medium. It is equal to the ratio of the amplitude of the reflected

wave to the incident wave, with each expressed as phasors.

Relative humidity: It is the ratio (expressed as a percentage) of the amount of moisture

actually in the air to the maximum amount that can be present at a

given temperature.

Solar drying: In solar drying, the produce is contained in an enclosed space, and

the air in contact with it is heated by solar radiation.

Solar radiation: It is the energy we get from the sun. In this study, the solar rays fall

on the dryer and heat up its surface. The air inside the dryer will be

circulated by fan, so the air which passes over the surface of the

dryer gets heated due to convection.

Thermal Energy Storage: This is like a battery for a system to store excess heat or energy to

be used later. In this study, a fin-type solar collector was designed

as a medium for thermal energy storage.

Thermosiphon effect: It is a physical effect and refers to a method of passive heat exchange

based on natural convection, which circulates a fluid without the

necessity of a mechanical pump.

Transmittance: It is a measurement of how much light passes through a substance.

The higher the amount of light that passes through, the larger the

transmittance. If all the light passes through a solution without any

absorption, then absorbance is zero, and percent transmittance is

100%.

Wet Mass Basis: This is a measure of the water in a solid, expressed as the weight of

water as a percentage of the wet solid.
