1.0 PURPOSE:
To establish and maintain the documented procedures to ensure that the HR plates are meeting
the requirements as per the applicable specifications / standards.
2.0 SCOPE:
This work instruction is intended for inspection of the plates (Visual & Dimensional) before
using them for production.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITY :
Sr. Engineer / Officer (QC) shall be responsible for the stage – II inspection of plates as referred
in flow chart.
4.0 METHOD:
4.1 Verify grade colour code on the stock plates as per grade colour chart for identification.
4.2 Verify the calibration of all the instruments prior to inspection.
4.3 Verify the plates & Heat No. from the supplier test certificates.
4.4 If the HR Plates are inspected by any third party inspection agency as appointed by WGSRL/
client at steel supplier premises, then the inspection report of the inspection agency shall be
verified before releasing the plates to the operation department. If any discrepancies observed
the same material shall be kept under hold until it is cleared in all respect. The inspection report
shall be available with the Sr. Officer / Officer (QC).
4.5 Check each plate for any surface defects like scabs, pits, dents, slivers, scratches etc. from the
top side of the plate. In case, such defects found, the same shall be ground and thickness shall
be checked for conformance. If beyond acceptance, then plate shall be cut if length permits or
rejected and will be treated as non conforming plate.
4.6 Thickness of each plate is checked at minimum three places & recorded.
4.7 Check & record the length, width & diagonals of plate by measuring tape-minimum three plates
per hour. Frequency of check shall be increased if found necessary.
4.8 Enter Plate No., Heat No. & Dimensional details in SAP system. After confirmation the system
will automatically generate an unique Pipe No. which shall be written on both ends of plate.
4.9 After dimensional & visual check, write Plate No., Heat No. on one end of the plate & mark the
end by “F” & “T” meaning “FRONT” & “TAIL”.
4.10 For non-confirming plate, the system flow shall be as per WGSRL/LS/QC/WI/31. Non-
conforming plates are segregated and yellow colour band is applied on both sides at 100mm
from ends. A complaint is lodged to supplier for its verification & replacement. In non-
conformance report, the final disposition of the plate is decided.
4.11 If the plate is released in emergency situation without carrying out the testing, then the plate is
identified under positive recall. A green cross on both the ends is marked for identification. In
case of failure, all such plates of failed heat are recalled & a NCR is generated for final
disposition.
5.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA: As per MPS/QAP/Process Chart.
6.0 RECORDS: Inspection results shall be recorded in report No.WGSRL/LS/QA/02 &
WGSRL/QA/025.
7.0 REFERENCE: Chapter 4.1 of DPM-LS/QA&C.
