What is the Guidebook?

The Washington State Guidebook on Military & Community


Compatibility’s primary goal:
• To be a tool box to help local land use planners understand
land use planning considerations near military facilities and
ranges.

This is not related to and will not affect:


• Any ongoing environmental review process (EA or EIS),
record of decision (ROD), or military use, activities, or plans.

Sponsor/Funding
• Washington State Department of Commerce secured a grant from the US
Department of Defense Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) to produce a
technical guidebook for jurisdictions that plan land use under state law.

Scope and Audience


• Statewide look at common challenges and approaches to compatibility.
• Local government planners, military planners, and community members

• Department of Commerce - program manager; technical writing
• MAKERS Architecture and Urban Design - facilitator; writing support
