Key Terms & Definitions:

● Algorithm - A precise sequence of instructions for processes that can be executed by a

computer
● Bug - Part of a program that does not work correctly.
● Debugging - Finding and fixing problems in an algorithm or program.
● Program - An algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a
machine

Lesson Introduction (Hook, Grabber):

Ask class what they know about robots
Discuss some robots

Overview:
Using a set of symbols in place of code, students will search for the bug in the Bee Bot’s
algorithm. Students will use the steps to find the bug(problem) in the sequence of instructions
that is used for the Bee Bot to reach the finish line. This segment teaches students the
connection between symbols and actions, the difference between an algorithm and a program,
and the valuable skill of debugging.

Purpose:
This unplugged lesson brings the class together as a team with a simple task to complete: to
find a bug in the Bee Bots algorithm. This activity lays the groundwork for the programming that
students will do throughout the course as they learn the importance of defining a clearly
communicated algorithm.

Lesson Main:

1. Warm up (5 min)

Talking to Robots
Display: Powerpoint
● Bee Bot Video (1:13)

Discuss: Refer to the video that you chose and ask students how they think that the robot knew
what to do. Does a robot really “understand” what you say? Is it worried about getting in trouble
if it doesn't do what it's told?
Say: Robots can only do what they've been told to do, but we don't just tell them using words. In
order to do something, a robot needs to have a list of steps that it can read. Today, we are
going to learn what it takes to make that happen.

2. Activity (20 min)

Board Game-Aryanna Watters

How to Play:
● Rules will be pronounced in class, and questions are welcome from students.

Handy Rules of the Bee Bots:

● Forward means that the Bee Bot automatically goes forward one square
● Backwards means that it automatically goes back one square
● Right means the Bee Bot turns 90 degrees to the right
● Left means the Bee Bot moves turns 90 degrees to the left
● Programmers are not allowed to talk when the robot is working. This includes blurting out
answers or pointing out when the robot has done something wrong
● Programmers should raise their hand if they see a bug
3. Assessment (10 min)

Differentiation:

1. Differentiation for ability levels

● High ability learners: harder sequences will be given to the specific students
● Low ability learners: easier sequences will be given to the specific students

2. Differentiation for demographics

● Doesn’t apply to the lesson plan

3. Differentiation for languages

● Translate instruction video for the specific students

4. Differentiation for access & resources

● Provide Ipads for students
● Done in class (Wifi provided) so the students will not have to take anything home and
worry about it

Anticipated Difficulties:

Students get confused about the algorithms. Students with behavioral problems or with ADHD
might not be able to concentrate during activity.
Difficulties can be fixed by allowing the students to ask questions at any time during the lesson.
Students with have behavioral problems or ADHD will be given extra attention so they can stay
focused and stay on task.
