YOUR WORKCAMP

BRIEF WORKCAMP Our workcamp will allow you to learn about both global and local
DESCRIPTION environmental issues through theory and practice. If you are concerned, for
example, about climate change, waste management, animal protection,
sustainable solutions and other environmental topics then this work camp is
the one for you. Local Icelandic environmental issues as well as issues from the
participants’ countries will be addressed. Becoming one of over 1.5 million
tourists coming to Iceland every year will leave a mark. This work camp will
help you to be an environmentally aware traveller as well as a consumer.
SEEDS Environmentally Aware work camps will get a chance to improve the
local environment through hands-on activities. Our groups usually join the
campaign "Meet Us Do Not Eat Us" that SEEDS has been supporting the last six
years: A whale protection awareness project run in cooperation with IFAW
(International Fund for Animal Welfare). It may also be possible to organise a
visit to a local recycling centre whereby a tour of the plant is given and the
activities are explained. There are a selection of workshops whereby a deeper
understanding of issues can be studied and discussed. Topics can include
issues like animal farming, food waste, and sustainable practices such as
collaborative consumption and veganism. We also offer typical local leisure
activities (swimming pool, cinema and the flea market).
Please note this project is a learning/sharing camp in which everybody is
expected to contribute their own knowledge and experience, and not a
standard workcamp. We organize some voluntary service but in some cases it
will not be possible if the weather does not allow it as some activities take
place outdoors.
Celebrate the New Year in a vibrant city with new friends from around the
world. Watch the large firework display illuminate the sky, celebrate around a
bonfire and party into the night.
MEETING POINT TIME: 06:00 pm (18:00 hours) on Tuesday, December 27th, 2016.
LOCATION: Meeting point will be at SEEDS’ accommodation in Hverfisgata:
Address: Hverfisgata 92b, 101 Reykjavík. More details, click here or at

http://www.seeds.is/files/2016/Hverfisgata92b.pdf

LOCATION Reykjavik is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful
nature, using renewable energy sources - geothermal and hydro power.
The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and
North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view
of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. Reykjavik is often
called “the nightlife capital of the north”, but there is so much more than pubs
and clubs, it also gathers the most interesting aspects of Icelandic culture.

HOW TO GET THERE - TO REYKJAVÍK:
There are 2 main bus companies connecting the airport in Keflavík and the city of Reykjavík, the
Flybus and the Airport Express. The cheapest way is to take the Flybus from Reykjavík Excursions; since
SEEDS volunteers get a discounted ticket (50% off) when showing the voucher below completed.

http://www.seeds.is/files/2016/seeds-volunteers-reykjavik-excursions-voucher.pdf

Buses leave from the airport 35 – 40 mins after each flight has landed, so even if you are travelling late
at night, or your plane is delayed you will be able to catch this bus to Reykjavík.

The journey from the airport to the bus station in Reykjavík takes around 45 minutes. Passengers are
dropped off either at Laekjargata bus station (Airport Express) or at BSÍ bus station (Flybus); if you buy
the additional service then at a hotel, hostel or guesthouse in Reykjavík city centre.

Tickets can be bought online before departure, or in the Keflavík Airport terminal if you want to have
the discounted price, showing the completed voucher. Tickets cannot be bought on the bus. See
www.flybus.is or www.airportexpress.is for more information and details.

If you are staying at SEEDS accommodation in Hverfisgata 92b, we recommend you to ask for a drop-
off service at the Fosshotel Baron (Baron Hotel) at Barónsstígur 2-4.

If you take the additional shuttle service, please let the person know in the airport when you
are buying the ticket; if you buy the bus only to their stations it is a bit cheaper but you may have to
walk to SEEDS accommodation. You can pay for the bus in cash in ISK, Euros or you can use your
debit or credit card.

SEEDS accommodation is few steps away from this Hotel; Barónsstígur and Hverfisgata streets
intersection has a traffic light and there is a 10-11 convenience store. If you walk from Barón Hotel
along Barónsstígur uphill to Hverfisgata, then you take your right turn, cross over the street to the other
side and search for number 92b; there is SEEDS accommodation!
For more details about getting to Iceland please read the ‘Travel to Iceland’ section of the

FREE TIME Volunteers will have some days-off during the workcamp: either during the
weekend and or on the usual working days, Monday to Friday, depending on
the workcamp schedule and activities.
If you wish to do an activity independently of the group, you must discuss it
with the camp leader and s/he must be fully aware of your plans. Your
independence will be respected during the camp but the camp leader has
the ultimate responsibility for you and your safety while on our workcamp in
Iceland (they will have to sort out the problems if you get lost or injured).
Do not forget our leaders are volunteers like you, so try to co-operate with
them at work and during free time activities. They are not fully responsible for
organising your free time and they hope for your ideas and contributions.
Excursions (Northern Lights, Blue Lagoon, Golden Circle, South shore, etc) can
be arranged at discount fares. Weather in Iceland is unpredictable and it can
be cold or rainy. Please bring warm winter clothes, overcoats, scarves, gloves
and hats as part of the project may take place outside.
