over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific
details, and provide an objective summary of the text (New Jersey Department of Education,
2016, p. 6).

SWBAT identify the major themes of William TWBAT assess the students’ understanding of
Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. themes by having a group discussion about
the themes of the play, and having the
students take a Quizizz quiz.

The play “Romeo and Juliet”

“Romeo and Juliet” themes quizizz (Quizizz)
V. Pre-lesson assignments, knowledge and/or skills
Students have read the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. Students have also had
a lesson on how to identify themes in novels.
VI. Lesson Beginning/Hook
Students will watch a video on YouTube summarizing the play.
VII. Instructional Plan
1. Students will watch the video summarizing “Romeo and Juliet”.
2. Teacher and students will discuss the video.
3. Teacher will go over parts of the previous lesson involving themes.
4. Students and teacher will have an open discussion about what they believe to be the main
themes of the play.
5. We will then discuss how the theme is important to the development of the play.
VIII. Lesson Wrap up
Students will participate in a Quizziz quiz which has questions about identifying different themes
throughout the play.
IX. Culminating or Follow up Activity
Students will write a 1-2 page paper about the importance of identifying and understanding the
themes in a piece of literature, and how it helps students understand the rest of the literature
they are reading.
