1. What is a Sacrament?

A Sacrament is an outward sign (words & actions) instituted by Christ, to give us grace.

2. What is the purpose of the Sacraments?


The Sacraments have a threefold purpose:
⬜ To Sanctify us or make us holy: Which gives us the grace to live as disciples of Jesus &
live as members of the church.
⬜ To Build up the church: As the Body of Christ, which makes the Church an effective
sign of the Kingdom of God in the world.
⬜ To Worship God: Which brings us to God with thanks & praise which gives grace we
need to live as God’s people.

3. Do the Sacraments always give grace?


Yes, the Sacraments always give grace if we receive them with the right disposition.

4. Why can Baptism, Confirmation, & Holy Orders be received only once?
Baptism, Confirmation, & Holy Orders can be received only once because they imprint on the
soul a spiritual mark, called a character, which lasts forever.

5. Explain how these Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, & Holy Eucharist


are visible signs of initiation.
Christians are reborn in Baptism, strengthened by Confirmation, & sustained by the food of the
Eucharist.
6. Name & describe in short the Sacraments of Initiation, the Sacraments of
Healing, & the Sacraments of Service.
● The Sacraments of Initiation are :
➢ Baptism: We are welcomed into the church, becoming children of God
➢ Confirmation: We are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
➢ Holy Eucharist: We receive Jesus Christ, the bread of life.
● The Sacraments of Healing are :
➢ Penance: We turn to God with sorrow for sin & receive his love & forgiveness.
➢ Anointing of the Sick: People who are sick & suffering are helped & comforted.
● The Sacraments of Service are :
➢ Holy Orders: Baptized men are ordained to lead & serve the Church
➢ Matrimony: A baptized man & woman are strengthened for family life & service
by their faithful love.

Every sacrament consists of
1) Matter
2) Form
3) Minister
4) Effects
8. What is “Matter” of a Sacrament?
The matter of a Sacrament is the material or physical sign through which God communicates
his divine life.
E.g. The matter of Baptism is water.

9. What is the “Form” of a Sacrament?


The form of a Sacrament is the prescribed words necessary for its celebration.
E.g. Marriage rites

10. What is meant by “Minister” of a Sacrament?


The minister of a Sacrament is the person who performs the sacramental act.
E.g.: Only a bishop can serve as the minister of Holy Orders.

11. What is meant by “Effects” of a Sacrament?


The effects of a sacrament are the benefits or the fruits you receive after receiving a particular
sacrament.
E.g.: Anointing of the sick. People suffering from illness are being healed.

12. What is the Paschal Mystery?


The Paschal Mystery is Christ’s work of redemption accomplished principally by his Passion,
death, Resurrection, & glorious Ascension. The Paschal Mystery has two aspects: by his death,
Christ liberates us from sin & by his Resurrection he opens for us the way to new life.

13. Can you name the four Marks of the Church?


The Church, the people whom God gathers together, has four marks:
● One,
● Holy,
● Catholic &
● Apostolic

The Church is One because she proclaims the one faith.

The Church is Holy, because Jesus is holy & because the Church
teaches the way to holiness.

The Church is Catholic, (universal) because she proclaims the faith in


all its fullness & reaches out to all people.

The Church is Apostolic because she is built on the lasting foundation


of the twelve Apostles.
14. What is the Catholic Church?
The Catholic Church is the community of those who profess their belief in Jesus Christ as the
Son of God, publicly affirm that belief through Baptism, celebrate it through the Eucharist,
accept the teachings of Christ that have come down to us from the apostles, & carry out the
sacramental life & mission of the Church under the leadership of the Pope & those ordained in
apostolic succession.

15. What are we called to do as members of the Church?


We are called to give witness to our faith in Jesus Christ through word & action. We are to be
his presence in the world helping to fulfill his mission to bring all people to God.

16. Why are the sacraments important?


We cannot expect to make it to heaven without God’s grace & the sacraments are outward
signs started by Christ to give us grace. The sacraments increase the life & love of the Trinity in
us, called sanctifying grace. The sacraments also give us specific graces for our duties.

18. What are the effects of grace?


The effects of grace are:
1. Grace makes us holy & pleasing to God.
2. Grace makes us adopted children of God.
3. Grace makes us temples of the Holy Spirit.
4. Grace gives us the right to heaven.
