Lesson Topic: Shapes Grade level: Preschool Pathways (ages 2 ½-3 ½)

Length of lesson: small group of three kids lasting 15 minutes

Stage 1 – Desired Results

Content Standard(s):

Shapes MA 1:1
The child recognizes names and describes common shapes and their properties.

Geometry for young children involves observing, playing with, and purposefully
investigating shapes that are found in their environment. Beginning in infancy, children
compare objects by form and shape. This familiarity is a foundation for more complex
learning experiences involving shape, position, and orientation in space.

1. Uses the names of geometric shapes when describing objects found in the
environment.

▪Says, “I have a pink oval,” when playing Shape Bingo. ▪Asks, “May I have
another square block?”
▪Declares, “Look, the stop sign is an octagon.”

Learning goal(s) (end goal): Essential Question(s):

Students will be able to: -What makes each shape different.
- Where can you find shapes in the real
Being able to Identify basic shapes world?
triangle, circle, square, and rectangle.

Success Criteria (how students will meet the learning goal(s) in student
language):
I can:
-I understand the basic shapes.
-I understand what makes the shapes different.

Stage 2 – Assessment Evidence

Performance Task(s) (formative):
I will let the student explore with the shapes by tracing templets of them to paper.
Students will play with the magnet game of shapes located in the classroom.
I will have them react into a bag and pull out a random shape. As they pull out one
shape they will name the shape and color.

Stage 3 – Learning Plan

Learning Activities –

Vocabulary:
-Circle
-Triangle
-square
-rectangle

Pre-Assessment:
I will show the small groups the shapes and see if they know any of the
names before teaching them which shape is what.

Procedure

Materials
-circle, triangle, square, and rectangle templates that are laminated.
-magnetic board with matching shapes
-puzzles involving shapes
-bag (not see through)
-Wooden shaped blocks (circle, triangle, rectangle, and square)
Extensions & Enrichment:
If students show a basic understanding of the lesson they will be given a
shape puzzle to work on. This allows them to understand what it takes to
make a shape.
Students that need a little bit more help will then do another activity
involving shapes. The activity allows them to practice using their hands with
learning what makes shapes different. Each child will place their hands into a
bag that you cannot see through and tough each shape. This approach allows
me to connect to different type of learners. This approach will work for hands
on learners.
Differentiated Instruction:
With knowing my students and what works best for them I am going to put
them in groups that work best together. It will also help with teaching
because I know what learning style work best for each student. I know which
students can get things quicker and which students need more help.
Accommodations:
Students that are having trouble understanding shapes I will create another
small group with those students. I will then spend
Technology:
I will show a cartoon video on Youtube about shapes and colors.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfLYc3dEBHw
This will be a great video to show because my students are really into cars.
It’s important to tie in things that will keep them interested in learning.
Sources:
I used the Arizona content standards as my Source to brainstorm things I can
be doing for lessons.
