    Gender is a category of analysis that has been underutilized in historical research. While gender has typically referred to biological or cultural identities of men and women, it is better understood as a social construction that organizes relationships of power. An analysis of gender can reveal how hierarchical power relations are established and how norms are constructed and enforced. Examining the changing meanings and representations of gender in history can provide insight into shifts in social and political organization over time.
