Provides an overview of physical, motor, perceptual, cognitive, social/emotional and

growth and development birth through adolescence. Analyzes social, parental, cultural,

brain, and economic influences on development.

Skime 2

I would like to introduce you to Cheyenne. Cheyenne is aged 14 and is of

average height, at 5 feet 4 inches, weighing 113 lbs. Cheyenne is just finishing the 8th

grade and is currently enrolled at the GET middle school. Cheyenne is a very athletic

young lady and enjoys cross country the most. Cheyenne’s other interests would

include art, music and, reading, and writing her own short stories. Cheyenne seems to

really excel at these topics.

Cheyenne comes from a non- traditional family. Both parents are together but

have not married. Cheyenne has a half-sister from her mother and two half -brothers

from her father. Cheyenne is the youngest of her siblings, at 14 she feels left out at
Skime 3

times, as they are all in the 20’s and have started families of their own. Also, the siblings

are all out of town or state, making it hard for them to spend time with her.

Cheyenne’s family is not a religious family, but they are family orientated. Both

of Cheyenne’s mother comes from a family of 5. Both her parents have been married for

45 years and are now enjoying retirement. Her mother’s siblings are both younger and

are all very close. Cheyenne’s father is also from a family of 5 but his family is not as

close, his parents both divorced and his sibling have their own lives and are not very

involved. Her father does involve himself with her mother’s family and activities.

Cheyenne’s parents are very open on many topics in life and are very

involved in Cheyenne’s schools and activities. Cheyenne’s parents do tend to be more

lenient with Cheyenne than with the other siblings. Cheyenne seems to know the rules

and responsibilities that are required of her and always knows the consequences.

Cheyenne is very open with her parents and keeps an open dialogue with them. Her

mother more than her father.

Physical Domain: relates to changes, growth and skill development of the body,

including development of muscles and senses.

At this time hormones and puberty will begin. Boys will have voices that change,

grow facial and pubic hair. Girls will grow breast, grow pubic hair, and some may get

their period at this time. Young teens at this time will start to become more independent

and make more choices about friends, schools studies and, their personalities and

interests become stronger.

Comments: Cheyenne has met all these physical milestones. Cheyenne has felt

awkward at times, due to these natural developments. She felt self-conscious and still

does at times. Which is natural. She started off by wearing hoodies all the time, to

eventually coming to terms on her physical attributes being normal and nothing to be

ashamed about, that every teenager goes through this at one time or another. Cheyenne

still continues to be shy about talking about it with her parents but has lots of friends

and a sister that is always available either in person or by phone if she has a question

she feels to shy to ask her parents about, sometimes she will even go to her

Grandmother for advice on an issue.

Skime 7

Affective Domain: includes the manner in which we deal with things emotionally, such

as feelings, values, appreciation, enthusiasms, motivations, and attitudes.

Comments for affective domain. Cheyenne exceeds in most of the affective domain

categories. Cheyenne does have eating issues, she is a very picky eater but does eat,

Cheyenne does not like the texture or taste of most meats and will not eat. Cheyenne

has since birth refused to eat eggs, and at this time still will not eat them, or anything

with them in it. Cheyenne is not depressed, she has her ups and downs like any average

teenager, most of it is the social drama of school. Most times Cheyenne would rather

avoid all drama.

Cognitive domain: relates to the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment,

Red Flags

Children develop differently and many of those children have red flags in their

development. Cheyenne is lucky and has no red flags in her physical development. Red

flags in physical development can consist of

 Vision

 Speech

 hearing

 walking

just for a few examples.

Skime 13

Cheyenne’s affective development consists of two red flags. Cheyenne deals with

anxiety and panic attacks, not as regular as she used to. Cheyenne has learned to count

backwards, and to tap her fingers when she feels these coming on. Most times when

these are triggered, Cheyenne has been overthinking issues, tragedies, and sometime

just everyday drama that has been a bit stressful on her. Cheyenne really has issues

with people wearing scrubs, so medical personal can really trigger a panic attack and

her anxiety.

 Anxiety

 Panic attacks

 Depression

These are just a few examples, two of which Cheyenne must deal with.
Skime 14

Cheyenne does not have any red flags in cognitive development. Cheyenne has

no issues making choices or knowing right from wrong. Processing information is easy

for Cheyenne, problem solving comes easy, and the things she can pull from her

memory of her early child hood is amazing.

 Memory

 Problem Solving

 Processing information

 Problem justifying

Are just some small examples of cognitive red flags.

Skime 15

Sleep is very important in a child’s development. I have noticed that

depending who you are asking, the hours of sleep may vary. As the child

develops, I feel the full sleep time recommended is needed for this child to

function. Cheyenne is one who has trouble falling asleep at night and is almost

impossible to get up in the morning. On some days after school, Cheyenne will

come home and sleep and hour or so before getting up and doing her homework.

The chart below is one I found to be in the middle of all the variances.
Skime 16

As a parent I know it is impossible for Cheyenne to get a well-balanced diet.

Cheyenne has picky eating habits and does not like to eat to much. Cheyenne loves her

cheese pizza’s which are always stocked in the freezer. Fruits are easy for Cheyenne to

eat and dairy products are always an easy choice; However, meats and eggs are one

thing Cheyenne will not eat. She does not like the taste or texture of meet and refuses to

eat it, and eggs, well she has never had one and refuses to try, if she knows something

has eggs in it, she will not bother trying it. Cheyenne does love her junk food and I wish

she would avoid it at times I know that she needs to get calories in. A normal teenager

her age and height should take in about 1,800 calories a day and boys her age should

take in 2,200.

Cheyenne is a very active girl, she loves to cross- country run and is very good at

it. So, for whatever extra calories Cheyenne puts on with junk food I know it will come

off. Cheyenne’s father is the same. He also is very active and must always be on the go

and doing something, he also has a over active thyroid which, we believe Cheyenne

may have inherited. Physicians are not worried about it, being it is not affecting

anything vital. Cheyenne has other recreational activities that include art, writing short

stories, and listening to music.

Skime 17

Her education is something Cheyenne is very proactive in, it is encouraged to

communicate with her teachers and to even debate on her grades. She does well in all

her classes except math, something she must have inherited from her mother. Cheyenne

understands the main concepts of math, but some problems arise when the problem

gets complicated for example story problems.

Cheyenne has submitted, every year since 4th grade a short story that the High

school students will read and critique, a small competition that Cheyenne has won

every year since, she then gets to spend the day with a high school student and with

author in a small writing workshop. Cheyenne loves this, and this is a great boost in

self-confidence.

Parents, Teachers, Para’s they all can enhance a child’s life. Keeping and

showing and interest in that child, keeping up a rapport, goes a long way. Sometimes

children might not feel as they get enough attention at home and seek out that attention

at school. Just that small token can boost that child’s esteem a long way. Encourages

that child to succeed.

By just providing small encouragement and materials Cheyenne exalts at

drawing, her reaction to praise on her work is all worth it. Makes her try all the harder,

knowing someone else is enjoying her work.

Skime 18

Top 10 ways for enhancing growth and development at the age of 14.

 Be honest and direct

 Quick and immediate

 Show interest

 Keep a rapport
Skime 19

 Provide space for growth (inside and outside)

 Provide choice

 Variety

 Challenge

 Be yourself

 Let them teach

In conclusion, this course I have learned, much new information, that I can and

have used, when dealing with Cheyenne. I have also learned that a lot of child

development I knew was from watching two daughters grow up. So, in truth I

had the upper hand in this class.

This course covered many categories. Physical, motor, perceptual,

cognitive, social and emotional growth. Growth and development from birth to

adolescence. It also showed us to analyze, social, parental, cultural, brain and

economic influences in the development off children.

I believe the most that I will take from this class would be my spark, of

course Vygotsky and his versatile ways will always come with me. Learning

about Maslow and his humanist way will be another reference I could go back to

when needed in the future. While many influences may affect someone’s

behavior, most behaviors may be redirected, and some may not.

Skime 20

The information on the brain and it’s development was informational,

teaching us about the mindset and activities to facilitate the development.
