Depth of Field Preview

SLRs keep the lens wide open for viewing and stop down to whatever aperture you
have set just before taking the picture; this is why the viewfinder always looks
the same even if you switch from f/1.4 to f/8 to f/16.

Flash: Guide Number & Range

Novices should note that 39 feet is the guide number, not the range.
Divide the guide number by your lens' aperture setting to produce
the actual range in feet.

SDHC Memory Cards Speed & Class Ratings

... For example, the SanDisk Extreme SDHC card has a Class 10 rating and a
maximum read/write speed of 30MB/s. These two performance measurements tell
you that the card should record a video stream no slower than 10MB/s and a
data burst of photos at up to 30MB/s.

Matching Card And Camera

... Speed and class ratings tell how well a card performs one or both of those
tasks. Speed ratings are used to indicate photographic performance, while class
ratings are used to indicate video-recording performance.

... Class ratings designate a card’s minimum speed, but give no indication
of maximum speed... One Class 4 card may have a maximum speed of 9MB/s while
another may write at up to 15MB/s...
...
Although any Class 4 card can record HD video, cards with faster read (or
“transfer”) speeds allow the user to spend less time downloading data from
the card to a computer...

Macro Extension Tube

If you are using a non-macro lens and need to focus closer for some reason, you
can place either Canon EF 12 II Extension Tube, $85 or Canon EF 25 II Extension
Tube, $140 between the body and the lens. Extension tubes move the lens farther
away from the plane of the sensor. You could, for example, take pictures of just
part of a person's face with a telephoto lens. If, however, you then wanted a
sharp picture of a subject at infinity, you'd have to unmount the lens, remove
the extension tube, and remount the lens.

Telecentric Lens

When developing the Four Thirds system, Olympus also worked on making its
lenses near telecentric. This means light from the lens hits the E-520's
sensor straight on, which should help to produce even illumination and
reduce a number of optical aberrations.

[ Sparring Partners (Olympus E-520 & Canon EOS 40D)

Telecentric Lenses

This requires the diameter of the lens mount to be approximately twice the
diameter of the imaging circle.

Infrared Photography

How to...
Take infrared photos without monkeying with your camera

You don't have to modify your digital camera (by removing the IR-cutoff filter
in front of the sensor) to take infrared images. In most cases, a little dribble
of infrared rays can still make it through to the sensor.

You need two accessories: an infrared-passing filter that blocks most visible
light (the Hoya R72 is popular), and a tripod, because exposures are going to
be very long -- 1/2 sec to 30 sec or longer at f/5.6, depending on the camera.
You can't focus through the filter, which is very nearly black, so some users
focus and compose with the filter off, then attach it. If your camera has live
preview, use it to compose. Resist the temptation to boost the ISO way up --
this will noise up the shots.

HD Video Modes: 1080p, 720p

The GF1 shoots HD-videos with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and H.264 compression.
Therefore Panasonic calls the video format "AVCHD-Lite", because it uses the
compression codec of the AVCHD-format but offers lower resolution than AVCHD,
which is full HD with 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Dreaded Purple Fringe

... You know what DPF is, of course: Dreaded Purple Fringe...

Many people call this violet border "chromatic aberration" but that's a cryptic
and somewhat incomplete description. I checked with a close friend who is an
engineer with a camera maker in Japan. He explained the phenomenon this way.

"The cause of the purple fringe (sometimes it is 'blue fringe') is due to the
magnification (image size) being different for each wave length. Therefore,
even when the subject is in focus on the green wavelength, for example, the
image size of the other color wavelengths are slightly different. That is why
the edge of the image has a blue or purple area. I am talking about chromatic
aberration related to magnification (in Japanese, 'Bairitsu Iro Shuusa')."

He went on, "One of the major reasons why purple fringe is so noticeable in
digital photography is because the customer can easily magnify the image in
pixel size to one hundred percent. Comparable viewing conditions would be
like printing the image the size of your wall and then viewing it from 10
inches away... "

Better lenses correct for this aberration, so that the purple-banded area is
all but invisible.

Nano Crystal Coating

Nano Crystal Coating is a special type of lens coating developed by Nikon for
its professional zoom and fixed-focal-length lenses.

Glass elements in lenses are coated to incresae their transmissive quality --

in other words, to make them as transparent as possible. Coating lenses also
reduces reflections between elements, which minimizes flare and ghosting,
where there are several bright light sources in a photograph.

The word nano means "billionth", and Nikon's Nano Crystal Coating consists of
tiny nanoparticles of magnesium fluoride, evaporated in layers onto the glass
to form a coarse granular structure, with air separating the particles. This
coating is highly transmissive, and only reflects around 0.06% of the light
that falls on it, meaning that 99.94% of the light that strikes it is
transmitted. Nano Crystal Coating for photographic lenses was adapted from
Nikon's Nanoparticle Coating, originally used to coat lenses inside machines
employed in etching silicon wafers.

RAW Advantages [(Sensor) Bit Depth]

I think an overlooked aspect of RAW is the dynamic range achieved. Typically,

in jpegs (8 bit color) the dynamic range is 4-5 stops of light. In a RAW file
with an 12-bit DSLR camera the density range is closer to 5-7 stops depending
on camera model. With the new 14-bit DSLR's on the market, the density range
is closer to 8 stops. Digital 16-bit camera backs from the likes of Leaf,
Phase One and Sinar are able to capture 11-12 stops of light, more than
film can.

I always propose that as a photographer, if you are not in control of the

light, shoot RAW... if you are in control of the light like an Underclass or
studio situation, then go ahead and shoot a jpg using a custom gray balance.

I think one of the major choices in choosing a digital camera right now is not
the number of megapixels, but the bit depth of the sensor.
