Unit Title: Utilizing Math Skills to Build a Better Zoo Name: Anthony Pantaleo
Content Area: Foundation-level Mathematics Grade Level: 6th – 9th Grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Common Core Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1
Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.2
Apply concepts of density based on area and volume in modeling situations (e.g., persons per square mile, BTUs per cubic foot).

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.3
Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with
typographic grid systems based on ratios).

CA Content Standards
Solve Real-World and Mathematical Problems Involving Area, Surface Area, and Volume

Extend understanding of area as they solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume of two and three-dimensional
objects composed of varying shapes

Apply Geometric concepts to modeling situations

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Unit Goals
The goal is to have all students demonstrate an understanding of the essential questions and address the student learning objectives.

Big Ideas/Essential Questions

How do we design spaces for humans vs spaces for animals?

What are the properties of two and three-dimensional figures?

How does the application of measurements and geometric relationships help us to solve actual problems in life?
In learning more about animals and zoos, are there ways we can improve on how we use our environment and the world around us?

Unit Summary:
This Unit Plan is designed to get students to utilize their mathematical knowledge in order to observe and analyze real world settings. They will use
geometric principles of surface area, volume, and perimeter to measure objects and spaces. By combining the different concepts, the students will be
able to create a floor plan based on their findings. The students will then visit a zoo and observe and take notes on their respective animals. In groups
and taking their research and knowledge, the students will provide suggestions for an updated animal enclosure and present an Infographic on what
they learned.
