Learning Targets:
 Know vocabulary related to questions
 Be able to translate English and French questions

Hook: 3 min
Imaginary trip- Students will be asked to imagine that they are on a trip to France. They
have just arrived at the airport and need to figure out how to get to their hotel, how to work the
metro system, and how to get to their must-see destinations. What kinds of questions would they
need to ask? Students will be asked to brainstorm questions and share with the class.

Direct Instruction: 15 minutes

Students will be given a worksheet with the English phrases and will be asked to fill in
the French as it is introduced as well as an example of the phrase in a sentence. An example will
be given to them, but they are welcome to create their own example if they wish. Emphasis will
be placed on pronunciation and repetition of the phrase. Students will then be shown a short song
that includes the interrogatives as well as their English meaning. The class will practice singing
the song along with the video.

Thumbs up/ Thumbs down if they are feeling more comfortable with the words and their
definitions.

Application Activity: 15 minutes

Students will be grouped in predetermined pairs and given a worksheet with ten
sentences in French that use the question words as well as the –er verbs that were introduced in
the last unit. They will work with their partner to translate the sentences from French into
English. They will then be asked to share their translations aloud to check their work.

Closing: 5 minutes
The students will be asked to work alone in order to write three example sentences of
their own using the interrogatives that were introduced in this lesson. They can use the example
sentences and the sentences that they translated as a model for their original sentences. Sentences
will be turned in at the end of class.

 Know the when to use est-ce que when asking questions
 Be able to produce original questions

Hook: 3 min
Students will be asked to think about the types of questions they ask their friends when
they have not seen them in a while. What kinds of questions do they greet each other with in the
mornings? What do their parents ask them about their day? Students will be asked to make a
short list in order to get them thinking about how they use different question words in different
settings.

Link to prior instruction: 3 min

As vocabulary related to questions were introduced the day before, these words will be
reviewed together as a class. Students will be prompted with the French word to give the
English word. Once all of the vocabulary has been completed this way the students will be given
the French word and will respond with the English word.

Direct Instruction: 15 min

Students have previously been introduced to the phrase “est-ce que” as an isolated
question phrase. Using magnets that have different parts of question sentences on them (verbe,
sujet, -, est-ce que, mot interogatif, etc.) Students will look at the sentences they translated the
day before to try to notice patterns of when and how est-ce que is used in French sentences. They
will be able to manipulate the magnets to move them under the different parts of the sentence.

Check for Understanding: 3 min

Students will be asked to explain the use of est-ce que in French questions to a partner.
Students will have the opportunity to ask questions for clarification before the activity.

Application Activity: 20 min

Working with a partner, students will practice writing an example sentence for each of
the new vocabulary words using the –er verbs that they were tested over earlier that week. They
can use the examples from their vocabulary sheet and the translation sheet as a model, but they
must be entirely new sentences.
Closure:
Students will write about how they will be able to incorporate questions into their daily
use of French.

*Students will turn in their group’s sentences*

question words that they hear throughout the song to work on listening comprehension.

Students will review the question vocabulary using white boards in order to practice
spelling. They will be prompted FrenchFrench and then English French. They will also
review the use of est-ce que in French question sentences.

Direct Instruction: 15 min

After reviewing est-ce que, students will learn how question inversion works in French
sentences. They will use the same magnets from the day before to map out the sentence structure
for question inversion as well as why question inversion means that you do not have to include
est-ce que. Question inversion is the most common way to ask questions in French. Why do they
think that might have come around? Examples from the sentences they wrote in class the day
before will be used to show how to change sentences from the “est-ce que” versions to the
question inversion.

Check for understanding:

Thumbs up/ down if the difference between the use of est-ce que and question inversion
is clear

Application Activity: 20 min

Students will be handed back the questions that they wrote the day before. Working in
their same groups, students will take the sentences they wrote using est-ce que and rewrite them
in the question inversion format. These questions in their interviews at the end of the week.
Closure: 3 min
Students will write a short explanation for the difference between est-ce que in questions
and question inversion as individuals

Students will turn in questions

Review the difference between est-ce que and question inversion

Direct Instruction:15 minutes

Students will review how to answer questions, how to use the negative, and vocabulary
related to answers such as parce que(because), mais (but), et (and), aussi (also), and très (very).
This vocabulary was introduced the year before, but students will be able to add them to their
question vocabulary sheet if they need to.

Check for Understanding:

Students will be asked about any remaining questions related to how to format their
answers to the questions they have spent the last period writing.

Application Activity: 20 min

Students will work individually to write answers to the questions that their group came up
with. They will not be able to read the answers when they do their interviews the next day, so
they will need to understand how their answers are formatted and what they want to say.
Students can ask to have their responses checked for correct use of est-ce que or question
inversion

Review greeting and farewells to be used at the beginning and end of interviews. How to
transition from one person to the other? Et toi? vs. Et vous? Students will have the opportunity to
ask any remaining questions about the interviews/ est-ce que vs. question inversion/ how to
answer questions before conducting their interviews.

Check for Understanding:

Thumbs up/ down if they feel prepared for the interviews

Application Activity: 20 minutes

Students will practice interviewing each other using the questions they have been writing
the past week. They will work in their same partner groups as they have all week so that they are
familiar with the questions and how to answer. Each person will take turns asking their partner
all of the questions they created-one question per question vocabulary word. The interviewer will
write down the answers of the interviewee. This will work on speaking, listening comprehension,
and writing. Students will turn in their recorded answers at the end of class.

Closure: 3 min
