Today we will read a book about a family who loves to create music using instruments called My
Family Plays Music.

So, let’s begin the story. Listen carefully to what instrument the family member’s plays and by
raising your hand first you will guess which person on the page each family member is. Do not
shout out the answer or point until you are called on.
1. Read the book and pause before turning the page and identify the family member
and their instrument based on the text.
2. Ask 1-2 children to point out the family member and their instrument.
3. After children point out which family member is the correct person, ask how they
knew the answer?
a. Give the children clues on which color and how each instrument looks.
b. As we read each page can you find the main character and see which
instrument she is playing.
4. There is 11 pages with 2 identifiable instruments. Ask children to guess and share
clues to which one it is.
5. Also there are other instruments in the background. Ask children if they can see
any other instruments.
At the end of the story, ask the children: How many instruments do they think the main character
is able to play? Count out loud on the second to last page which list all the instruments.

Today we are going to make our own instrument;

1. First we will pass out 2 paper plates to everyone
2. Next I will give each student a handful of beans to place on their plate and place the other
plate over it.
3. Now we will staple around the border of the plates so that none of the beans get out.
4. Now each student will color and decorate their plates on the outside using markers,
crayons, glitter glue

When you are finished decorating your paper tambourine, have the children turn to their
neighbors and share their decorations and explain how they look alike.

5. Closure:
1. Ask the student to name the instrument they created.
2. How do they feel about their tambourine? Open the book to the second page and show
them that the main character also played a tambourine
3. Now have each student shake their tambourine to the beat of your claps or song.
