AIM: TO DETERMINE MAGNETIC
MOMENT OF A BAR MAGNET USING
DEFLECTION MAGNETOMETER (TAN B
POSITION).

APPARATUS REQUIRED: Deflection

magnetometer, two magnets, spirit level,

THEORY:
1) F = H Tan 𝜃 (According to
tangent law)
2) F1 = M1/[(d2+I12)3/2] = H Tan 1 𝜃

3) F2 = M2/[(d2+I22)3/2] = H Tan 2 𝜃

4) M1/M2 = (d2+I12)3/2/[(d2+I22)3/2] x Tan 1 /

𝜃

Tan 2
𝜃

59-
5) M1/M2 = Tan 1 / Tan 2 , if I1=I2 or I is so
𝜃 𝜃

small that I2 becomes negligible compared

to d2.

PROCEDURE:
➢To set the magnetometer on tangent-
B position:
♦ For this, rotate the compass box so that
the line joining the 0-90 division of the
circular scale is along the arms without
disturbing the compass box till the pointer
has reached 0-0. In this case arms are
parallel to the magnetic needle and are in
magnetic meridian.
♦ Level the compass box with the help of
spirit level without disturbing its
orientation.
69-
♦ Note the lengths of magnets and mark
their middle point.
♦ Place magnet ‘A’, say on the south arm of
the magnetometer, North Pole pointing
towards west. The magnet should be
placed perpendicular to the arms and in
such a way that a pivot of the needle lies
along the equator of the magnet.
♦ Adjust the distance of the magnet such
that the deflection is between 250– 600
(preferably nearest possible to 450). Note
the deflection of both the ends of the
pointer and the distance of the middle
point of the magnet from the pivot of the
compass needle.
♦ Reverse the magnet pole-to-pole so that
now the South Pole points towards east
79-
and again note the deflection keeping the
distance constant.

➢ Change the face of the magnet and

again repeat the above procedure.

✦ Place the magnet on the north arm at the

same distance and exactly in the same way
repeat the above procedure.
✦ 16 readings are taken and their mean
values gives 𝜃1 .
✦ Put the magnet ‘A’ away from the
magnetometer and place magnet ‘B’ at the
same distance as ‘A’ and in the same way
repeat the above procedure and note 16

89-
readings. The mean of these readings
gives 𝜃2 .
✦ This completes one set of observations.
✦ Find M1/M2.
OBSERVATION TABLE:

RESULT: The ratio of M1/M2= ______

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Handle the apparatus carefully.
2. Avoid placing any other magnets or
magnetic objects in the vicinity of the
99-
apparatus as that may disturb the
magnetic field.
3. Parallax must be absent while readings
are being noted.
