The author of this web page highlighted the established framework of the personality traits
that are known as Five Factor Model (FFM). The author also explained about alexithymia was
identified over four decades ago by Boston psychoanalyst John Nemiah and colleagues in
1976. Alexithymia literally translates from the Greek to mean “no words for emotions.” The
most well-established measure of alexithymia is the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-
20), which Bagby and his colleagues published in a landmark book. Scores on the TAS-20
correlate with feelings of psychological distress and difficulties in regulating emotions.
Additionally, TAS-20 scores are related to emotional intelligence, particularly in the component

The author outlined the need to encompass the situation in the study of personality, but with
a focus on the acquired meaning of stimuli and on the situation as perceived, viewing the
individual as a cognitive-affective being who construes, interprets, and transforms the stimulus
in a dynamic reciprocal interaction with the social world. The book also focused on the
idiographic analysis of personality that had originally motivated the field, and the complexity,
discriminative facility, and uniqueness of the individual, and sought to connect the expressions
of personality to the individual's behavior -- that is, to what people do and not just what they
say. Even the intrinsically contextualized "if…then…" expressions of the personality system -
- its essential behavioral signatures -- were foreshadowed in this book that fired the opening
salvo in a search for "a truly dynamic personality psychology."

The author highlighted the established connection of personality and psychopathology that
are related to one another in three different ways. Personality and psychopathology can
influence the presentation or appearance of one another, commonly referred to as a
pathoplastic relationship. They can share a common, underlying etiology, referred to as a
spectrum relationship. And, finally, they can have a causal role in the development or etiology
of one another. Each of these relationships has significant theoretical and clinical implications,
and each will be considered in turn.
