1. Good Things
2. Begin 4.2 Self Notes
8:53 am “Ok. Yesterday I made a big oops!” as he hands out guided 2a, 3a, 3c, 3d
notes. He forgot to hand these out yesterday.
“Next, I am going to hand out a blank sheet of paper. I student
offers to help him do this.
“Take this blank sheet of paper and fold it in half, can be hotdog
or hamburger, it doesn’t matter. You should have 4 boxes, yes?
All students have followed the instructions and have 4 boxes.

8:56 am.
“Next please, open up your books to page 152 please.” Mr. 2a, 2b, 3a, 3c
Rieger checks to make sure that everyone is there. He points out
the blue headings in the book on page 152. Using a document
camera, Mr. Rieger shows/describes what to put on their paper
and where.

Students start to bombare Mr. Rieger with questions. 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 3a, 3b,
“Can you turn off the lights?” 3c, 3d
“Camera is on freeze!”
“Can you make it bigger?”
“Should we put down page numbers?”
Mr. Rieger does a good job of fielding the questions and settle
the students concerns. A little too much chatting here, but not
overboard and it is a positive that these students feel free to
express these concerns.

8:59 am Mr. Rieger moves through the main topics (blue sub headings) 2a, 2d, 3a, 3d
and asks “Everybody see these?” A student replies with a
question of understanding and Mr. Rieger replies with correction
and encouragement.

9:01 am As the boxes become full, with titles that the students are able 2b, 3b, 3c, 3d
to see, the subheadings, they start to anticipate what will go
next in the boxes.

9:03 am Mr. Rieger instructs the students to turn their books back to the 2a, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b, 3c,
beginning, page 152. “Now, let’s read underneath the heading 3d
to fill in the boxes with notes.” Students read a section, they
write down notes together as Mr. Rieger shows them
what/how/where to write their notes using the doc camera. All
of the students are following along, filling in their boxes with
notes. As the student finishes reading their section, Mr. Rieger
thanks them and asks them to pick another student to read the
next section.

9:10 am Mr. Rieger fields another question. “Where do you think these 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 3d
Scribes would fit on the social pyramid of the time?”
“The Social Pyramid?” Mr. Rieger asks. “Good question. Let’s
look and see!” They turn to the page that has a picture of the
social pyramid and discover together that the Scribes would be
somewhere in the middle. NICE!

9:12 am The first square is completed. Mr. Rieger describes the 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d
assignment. “Using your book, fill in the rest of your boxes just
like we did together.” Questions follow:
“Is this homework?” “Yes.”
“Can we work together?” “No.”
Mr. Rieger emphasizes, “use your time wisely, you have plenty
of time now to work!”

9:15 am Mr. Rieger walks around the room, checking for understanding, 2a, 3d
providing directions and answering questions.

9:18 am “Nice work everyone!” All of the students are 2a, 2b
working/engaged.

9:22 am “Ok. I want to go over the next 2 boxes with you. Let’s make 2a, 2b, 2d, 3a, 3b, 3c,
sure we all are on the same page. Papyrus. Egyptian Lit.” 3d
Mr. Rieger waits for a student to focus, thanks him, and then
they work together be following along in their boxes with notes
together. Mr. Rieger calls upon students to share what they
have already written down.
I do see one student focusing on a paper airplane that he has
created. Mr. Rieger has already addresses this earlier by stating
“Ground that or throw it away!”

9:29 am Continuing on with the pyramid section. “We are only looking 2a, 2b, 2d, 3a, 3b, 3c,
for 3 things. You will only need to know 3 things about each 3d
section.” Some students are surprised by this, they did not
know this. Some are basically writing down the entire section
from the book.
I did not hear this either, perhaps you need to emphasize this
prior to turning them lose on the assignment.

9:32 am “One last thing, Anabel?” A student provides some more 2a, 3a, 3b
information about pyramids. Class keeps on working, right up
to the bell.

9:33 am “Due tomorrow! You need 3 things for each section of notes.” 2a, 2b, 3a, 3d
Mr. Rieger directs the students as they head out the door.
It is great that they are working up to the bell, but you need to
provide some time for reflection/closure.

Mr. Rieger and I had a meeting during the next class hour. I
pointed out the chattiness, but there was good dialog between
the teacher and students.
I pointed out that the need for only 3 items under each section
was not clearly conveyed to the students. I didn’t notice this as
well.

Lastly, I discussed the need for reflection/closure to the lesson.

Over however, a solid lesson and interaction with his students.
Working on pacing will come, but Mr. Rieger is on the right
path. He will be an asset to any staff!
