After reading multiple articles and having a class discussion of the History of Levittown, NY and
its suburban development. Students will then research multiple documents about Levittowns eary
construction, students will use create a PowerPoint presentation on the historical events that lead
to the town’s creation. The grade will then be calculated by using a teacher made rubric where
students must score at least a three out of four.

MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner(s)*)
Before the lesson, students will observe a picture of the country plane that was used before
William Levitt purchased the land. Students will then see a before an after image of the same
location illustrating the construction of suburb Long Island in the process.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
(including Key Questions)
Too begin the lesson, students will do research on The History of Levittown. As they gain
knowledge of the famous home developer William Levitt and his role in creating affordable
housing for veterans after World WarII, children will understand the impact he had on not only
suburban Log Island, but the entire world. The once a plethora of data is collected on its creation,
students will use research they gathered to create a Power point Presentation. They will then
present their content in front of the class with excellent presentation skills.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

Strategy
 Using direct instruction, children will use links provided by the teacher in order to gain
proper research on the topic.
Indicator: Using the websites provided consisting of a “Times Magazine” article of
William Levitt, children will be properly informed of his impact he had on the world of suburban
living.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)
• The student who is an English language learner will be allowed to elect a designated speaker
for the presentation.

 Children with a learning disability will be given an outline on specifically what needs to be
included within the presentation.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

Sample way to differentiate

Struggling Students
Students will be given the opportunity to create PowerPoint with important pictures that relate to
history.

Average Students
Students will be research how the blue prints of Levittown suburbia were repucated around the
world.

Advanced Students

Students will research and make connections how the creation of suburvan living impacted the
rest of the United States. What did it mean for the economy in America?

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)


After reading an article about “The History of Levittown”, students will then take a Sporcle Qiuz
with questions about the article. In addition to this, students will be timed trying to complete a
SMARTBoard assignment solving the words in an anagram. Finally, students will have a
summative assessment by constructing a PowerPoint presentation on their research.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

 After completing the lesson. Students will research the other cities that William Levitt helped
establish suburban homes. Teacher will then check Historical accuracy.
