BSED 1-5 GEO 1100

INTRODUCTION

The Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago, or chain of islands, located off the
south-eastern coast of Asia. Consisting of over 7,000 volcanic islands with a total land area of
nearly 300,000 square kilometers (approximately the size of Arizona), islands of the Philippines
are predominantly mountainous except for densely populated coastal plains on larger islands.
The country is located over the Philippine Trench, a plate tectonic boundary which forms part of
the Ring of Fire (see Map #2). The Ring of Fire, a region closely associated with volcanic and
earthquake activity, lends a heavy influence to volcanic activity on the islands of the Philippines
(one such example is Mount Pinatubo, a very active volcano on the island of Luzon. See Map #1
for location of Luzon). The geography allows for some cultural diffusion, Islam, Buddhism, and
Christianity all reached the islands by the mid17th century although there are still places that are
extremely isolated to the point of having no electricity7 at all and primitive methods of life.

Geographic location refers to a position on the Earth. Your absolute geographic location is
defined by two coordinates, longitude and latitude. These two coordinates can be used to give
specific locations independent of an outside reference point. Relative location, on the other hand,
defines a location in terms of another. For example, Lille is north of Paris. These two types of
geographic location are useful in different circumstances.

Uses of Absolute Geographic Location

The coordinate system of geographic location is used to represent specific locations on the globe.
Because longitude and latitude lines form a grid on the Earth, you can pinpoint precise locations
with just two coordinates. Hence, these coordinates are extremely useful whenever global
navigation is concerned: Global positioning devices, maps and other navigational services
benefit from such an accurate way of noting position.

Uses of Relative Geographic Location

Relative geographic location is useful for unassisted human navigation. With no instruments, you
must rely on natural landmarks and other points of interest to gauge your position. For example,
it is probably easier to drive north to Colorado Springs, Colorado, knowing that it is roughly 72.4
kilometers (45 miles) north of Pueblo than it is to navigate to 39 degrees north, 105 degrees west.

GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

The geographic location, essentially the distance from the equator, determines the amount of
atmosphere the radiation must pass through before hitting the collector. The greater the latitude,
the more atmosphere the radiation must go through, as shown in Figure 63. More atmosphere
traversed results in more energy lost. The distance from the sun is also slightly longer further
from the equator, but the sun is so far away that this increase in distance is insignificant.
Location also determines the weather patterns. Obviously a cloudy climate will be less
productive than a sunny one. Myra Wong, in Field Guide to Appropriate Technology, (2003).
DISCUSSION

What is/are the significance of Philippine geographic location to your life?

As a Filipino, I’ve felt proud in our archipelago why? Because Philippines is one of the
most beautiful country in Asia. Philippines composed of 7,000 islands with a total land area of
300,000 square kilometers, it has 11 largest islands which contains 95% of the total land area.
Philippines was divided into three parts (3) which consist of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Philippines located at region of South East Asia. The geographic location of the Philippines was
important not necessarily in my life but also in your life, in his life, in her life, in our life. It is
important not only to know where is the location, but know what is the real archipelago and to
find the real beauty behind that country which is the Philippines.
What is Globalization?

Is the increasing interconnectedness of different parts of the world through common

processes of economic, environmental, political, and cultural change. Globalization or
globalization is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and
governments worldwide. Globalization has grown due to advances in transportation and
communication technology. With increased global interactions comes the growth of international
trade, ideas, and culture. Globalization is the word used to describe the growing interdependence
of the world’s economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in

goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information.

What is Geography?

Is the study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity
as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land
use, and industries. Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and
their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the
human societies spread across it. They also examine how human culture interacts with the natural
environment and the way that locations and places can have an impact on people. Geography
seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and
change over time.

How does Geography and Globalization affects you?

a. Culturally
b. Spiritually
c. Socially
d. Economically
e. Politically
Culture is the word we use to describe all the ways of life that characterizes a particular
group of people. With over seven billion people on Earth, there are thousands of different
cultures, each of which makes its own special contribution to Earth's wonderful diversity. It can
affects us in terms of norms, beliefs, culture, and tradition. For example the indigenous people
here in the Philippines, what if you go in their place? and you saw the tribes of indigenous
people Geography and globalization affects my cultural life through being influenced by others
and sometimes like other I also adopt new culture and applying it however, I assure that I am still
treasuring our own culture and still recognizing by doing it. Spiritually, as a Filipino we have a
different perspective, like for example the muslims they praise Allah, the Christian believes in
Christ they have "Simbang Gabi", "Mahal na Araw" (Semana Santa) the Iglesia ni Cristo they
believed in Bible. For me I believed in Jesus Christ why? because I believe God is our Creator.
Socially, Globalization has a positive effect on community by providing houses for the poor. The
geography affects the people Economics, the globalization has a positive impact on people and
the economy continue to developed so that the economy can increased the capital, increasing the
international integration on the labor market and the country can also develop and became a
competitive country. The geography affects the structure of one area if the globalization happens
the country also change. Politics, due to politics the economy can provide a high level of of
organization and suppress the state via political. The geography affects the politics Because the
location influenced the population density, natural resources and etc.
