1. Gitarama City Prison, Rwanda
Often called “the hell of living”, this prison with 600-person maximum houses 7,000 inmates. These inmates are subjected to extremely poor living conditions such as: prisoners taking turns sleeping due to the lack of room available, no shelter to protect against the weather, and spreading diseases that claim roughly 5-10 lives daily. The prisoners are all guilty of participating in the Rwandan massacre of 1994 where roughly 500,000 people were murdered. 2. Chikurubi Prison, Zimbabwe With cells measuring 30 feet by 13 feet, this maximum-security prison manages to cram 25 prisoners in that tight space. Regardless of its status as Zimbabwe’s’ largest correctional facility, multiple prisoners successfully escaped from their capture. This facility is notorious for its supposed mistreatment of its 17,000 prisoners.
3. Tadmor Military Prison. Damascus, Syria
Initially built as military barracks post- World War One, the Syrian Government re- purposed the facility as a prison that is commonly considered one of the worst in the world. This reputation is derived from the torture, harsh living conditions, and executions it inflicted on its population; a population which consisted of political and civilian Syrian Prisoners. Daily executions via sharp axes aside, the most notable event took place in 1980, where 500 prisoners were massacred by Syrian military forces. 4. United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility. Colorado This Prison exists to serve the worst criminals in America, those deemed unfit to mingle in general population settings. The inmates are subjected to 23 hours of isolated solitary confinement, leaving an entire hour for private (and heavily guarded) recreation. The facility is designed in such a way that prisoners have no idea where they’re located within the facility. This is to ensure that the terrorists and the severely mentally ill who fill its population will never escape.
5. San Pedro Prison. La Paz City, Bolivia
This “Prison” differs from most based on its economy of prisoner-made cocaine that the guards help sell-for a bribe of course. The economy also consists of restaurants and shops that prisoners run to pay the rent for their cells. It’s not uncommon to see the inmates significant other and children living in the prison. This city-prison is reserved for low-risk criminals, it’s even safe enough for tourists to visit. 6. Louisiana State Penitentiary. Often referred to as” the farm”, this state penitentiary houses a population which consist of violent offenders and death-row inmates. This property includes facilities such as: a fire station, a park, a golf course, a cemetery, a church and an airstrip; Most of these facilities aren’t accessible to prisoners. These amenities are used by guards, their families and some prison visitors instead.
7. The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center. Cebu,
Philippines This prison is most notably known for its dancing prisoners which were viral hits. Michael Jackson’s thriller is just one example of the incarcerated organizing a dance routine for the publics entertainment. This facility believes in rehabilitating its inmates but many question whether forced organized dancing was an appropriate treatment. 8. Leoben Justice Center. Leoben, Austria This sleek building has an architecture style that may trick people into thinking it isn’t a prison- but it is. The institution is committed to providing inmates with spacious kitchens, a balcony and a private bathroom in each cell. Upon a wall an inscription reads:” All persons deprived of their liberty shall be treated with humanity and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human person”. Maybe that quote is right outside it’s conjugal visitation room.
9.The Prison for Pirates. Hargeisa, Somaliland
For those who considered a pirate’s life glorious, consider what happens when they’re caught hijacking vessels. This prison was designed for pirates most of which were transferred from a facility in Seychelles. The government accepted the transfers regardless of a shortage of funds for holding and caring for these inmates. Thus the inmates are living in less than ideal conditions with only roughly $1.20 allocated to each prisoner for food and medical care. These Prisons are just as secure as the new CamperSafe locking system designed for all mobile home designs.
