Grade: 5 Topic Animal Cells Content Area: Science

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES (s) (Lesson Objective(s)*)

After a teacher led instruction on animal cells, students will be able to identify and explain the
different organelles found in an animal cells by composing a paragraph that describes what an
animal cell is and its organelles with a maximum of two errors.

NYS-CCLS / +NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

Next Generation Science Standards 5-PS1-1

Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.

Indicator: This will be evident when the students’ learn about animal cells, their
organelles, complete the SMARTBOARD activity, and complete their writing assignment.

New York State Common Core Standards- English Language Arts

Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to
task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in
standards 1–3 above.)

Indicator: This will be evident when the students write a paragraph that describes what
an animal cell and its organelles. The students will be using the proper grammar and appropriate
vocabulary words.

ISTE Technology Standards- Digital Citizens- 2b

Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including
social interactions online or when using networked devices.

Indicator: This will be evident when students’ participate in a Kahoot activity. The
students’ will know how to use the application from previous use. While the students complete
the activity, the teacher will assess student understanding.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES
 SMARTBOARD- animal cell lesson
 Animal Cell activity on SMARTBOARD
 I-Pad for the Kahoot activity
MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner(s)*)
There will be an image of an animal cell on the board. Students will try to guess what the picture
is.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
(including Key Questions)

 The teacher will introduce the class to what they will be learning. (What do
you think an animal cell is?) The students will turn and talk to their partner
to try to make a prediction.
 The teacher will instruct the students about animal cells. The teacher will
explain different organelles found in an animal cell and the teacher will also
show the students where they are found.
 The teacher will show an animal cell Youtube video. Questions will be
asked during the video to assess student understanding. (What does the
nucleus do in a cell? What does the cell membrane do?)
 The students will participate in a Kahoot activity.
 After reviewing the organelles in the animal cell, the teacher will assess the
student knowledge by having the students participate in a Kahoot activity
with their I-Pad. (

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

Strategy: Group discussion
Indicator: This will be evident when students participate in academic conversations about
the organelles that are found in an animal cell. Students will be engaged in a Kahoot activity
where they will be part of a team and they will discuss the answer that they think best answers
the question.

Strategy: Independent work

Indicator: This will be evident when the students independently write a paragraph about
the different organelles that are found in an animal cell.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)
 The student who is an ELL learner will be provided with images that show the different
parts of the animal cell. The student will also receive the vocabulary words prior to the
class.
 The student who is visually impaired will be seated in front of the classroom so that they
can see the board.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

Struggling Students: The students will be able to use at least two different organelles in the
animal cell.
Average Students: The students will be able to use at least three different organelles in the
animal cell.
Advanced Students: The students will be able to write about 5 different organelles and they will
be able to draw an animal cell and label its parts.

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)

Students will be assessed by…
 Compose a paragraph that describes what an animal cell is and its organelles with a
maximum of two errors.
 Be able to discuss the different parts of an animal cell
 Participate in class discussions during questions
 Kahoot activity

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
The students will do a Flipgrid video that describes an animal cell.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention: The student under direct teacher intervention will complete a
worksheet that asks them to explain the different parts of an animal cell.

Academic Enrichment: Students will be able to create a three dimensional animal cell with the
many different organelles.
