Analysis:
This article was about how a 12 year old girl got a ventricular assist device
implanted to help her heart and, by proceeding with this procedure, became the
youngest individual in the country to get this device. Lizneidy Serratos came into the
hospital with her mother relating a recent fire near their house in Reno to Lizneidy’s
shortness of breath. Lizneidy was then diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a
common reason for children to get cardiac implants, as only 10% of her heart was
properly functioning.
The pediatric cardiac team that was working with the Serratos family realized
the potential for a ventricular assist device, a device that helps the heart pump blood
to your body and carry out other functions, called the HeartMate 3 to help with
Lizneidy’s condition. They petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for the use of
this ventricular assist device as it was previously only used in adults. Within 24 hours,
they received a compassionate-use exemption, meaning that the Food and Drug
Administration was allowing for the use of the investigative device outside the use of a
clinical trial setting for treatment purposes. Currently, disincluding the battery pack
that sits outside her body, Lizneidy is able to face daily life as she did before, except
now breathing is an easier process and her heart is working to its fullest extent with
the aid of the HeartMate 3 ventricular assist device.
This article was very intriguing to me as it really exemplified an example of
different departments working together in pediatric cardiology and it showed how
different approaches have to be taken for each individual as each child’s heart has its
own complexities. In addition, this article echoed the importance of quick thinking and
problem solving as Lizneidy’s case was very serious and she would’ve required a
transplant immediately.
Overall, this article emphasized the importance of quick thinking and
teamwork in the field of pediatric cardiology. The initiative that her pediatric cardiac
care team took to contact the Food and Drug Administration to send in a proposal to
use the ring that was approved in Europe, and unapproved in the United States, was
incredible as it greatly helped improve the condition of Lizneidy. This really showed
me the potential in the field of pediatric cardiology for the incorporation of new ideas
into practice and the diffusion of ideas across the world.
