Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Ciera Walker Date: 12/2/2018

Grade and Topic: 3rd Grade Science Length of Lesson: 45-65 minutes

Mentor Teacher: Dr. Townes School:

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● Students will be given a hand outs where students will learn to identifying land and aquatic animals and
they will be tested with 100% accuracy
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Students will learn the difference between land and aquatic animals
● Students will be able to identify how land and aquatic animals reproduce.
● Students will learn how to complete an interactive activity to be tested on learned materials
● Students will learn about the environment in which some of their favorite animals live

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

● Analyze the internal and external structures that aquatic and land animals and plants have to
support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

MATERIALS:
● Microsoft Word App
● Teacher handout
● Access to a computer or laptop with internet access
● Prezi account
●Students will use technology to discover facts and land and aquatic animals and their behaviors.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
● The key concepts of this lesson are that there is a difference between aquatic and land animals.
● The academic language in this lesson is very general and the definitions needed for the lesson are
applied in the hand out.
● This lesson builds on students’ general knowledge of life science and knowing the animals that live in
the world with them.
● Students will over time begin to learn the importance of the environment we live in and how it affects
the wildlife. Focusing on growing conscience global citizens.
● To keep students interested in the lesson is why there’s an importance of planning differentiated
activities.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: I will ask students what they think aquatic and land animals are and present to them a
video that gives them an introduction into what we are learning in the lesson that day. Ask my students
if they think they have an aqua on land animal at home with them as a pet. Also create a little excitement
by asking who can be the quickest to find a picture of a land or aquatic animal.

● Procedures:
1. Students will be given a handout that provides them with a checklist of all the information they need
to complete the assisgnment as well as proper definitions needed for the lesson. This lesson can be two
parts the research and doing the presentations or made into one class session. I prefer splitting the lesson
into two days so that students don’t feel pressure or anxiety about the assignment.
2. The first 10 minutes of the class will be spent having an open-ended conversation with the students,
asking them what they know about land and aquatic animals. Questions such as: what is an aquatic
animal? What is a land animal? what is the difference between the two? Does some one have a land or
aquatic animal as a pet? Who knows where
3. Next the students will decide who their partners will be and get settled into their work stations.
4. It will take the students roughly 10 minutes to watch the videos required for the lesson.
5. It should then take the students 30-35 minutes to complete their research and create a Prezi
Presentation for the class. The teacher may have the students submit the Prezi to the teacher online
Dropbox for proof of completion after class incase there isn’t enough time for everyone to present or if
teacher decides to split the lesson into two days.
Closure: To close the lesson the students will complete their presentations for the class and write an
entry into science journal.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● Formative assessment will be the open-ended discussion with the class from the beginning of the lesson,
used as a general guide to see what the class knew as a whole. Each child presenting what they learned
about land and aquatic animals and the animal of their choosing will be their formative assessment.
MODIFICATIONS:
● List specific modifications for students who did not master the objectives.
● List specific modifications for students who are ready for enrichment activities.
