NORMS FOR THE PROCEEDINGS

Submission and general criteria


The participants in the “Colonial and Postcolonial Landscapes: Architecture, Cities,
Infrastructures” Congress are required to submit a short paper OR a full paper, in English.
The short paper should not exceed 2500 words. The full paper may have a maximum of 4000
words.
The Congress will publish online proceedings with ISBN, published online and with free
access, in which the short or full papers may be published after being reviewed by the chairs of
the sessions. The submission of one of these formats is required, though the publication of the
short/full paper in the online proceedings of the congress is not mandatory.
The chairs of the congress will suggest a selection of the received papers for publication at
Africana Studia, the international journal of the Centre for African Studies of the University of
Porto, Portugal, which has Scientific and Editorial boards, as well as internal and external peer-
reviewers.
The following instructions are based in the Africana Studia Journal Editorial Norms, so as to
allow for a direct submission of the selected papers. For more information on this possibility,
please consult Africana Studia’s page.

Images
If the paper includes images of any sort they should be numbered sequentially, from 1 onwards.
In the original the location of each image should be indicated by the author. The images should
have the extension JPEG, TIFF, XLS – Excel or EPS. Images should have at least 10x6 cm with
1200x800 pixels (300 dpi)

Reference norms
References within the text should follow the norm (author, year: page): (Rodrigues, 2000: 15).
If there is more than one reference to the same author a minor character should be added to the
name: (Rodrigues, 2000a: 15). If there is more than one author in the quotation, the reference
should be: (Rodrigues et al., 2000: 15).
Quotations and foreign words should come in italic.

Footnotes will only be used only for complementary information, preferentially not longer than
five lines in size 10.
A list of Bibliographical References should come at the end of the article and must only quote
the books, articles and manuscripts mentioned in the footnotes. The order of appearance is by
ascending chronological when there is more than one reference of the same author.

The bibliographical list should come as follows:

Translated books should include, if possible, the year of the first printing.
Quotations from online databases must always show the site/path, date of publishing and date
of reading.
References to archival sources should come in footnotes and start by the acronym of the
institution, followed by the archival units in descending order. Example: AHU, volume 1665.1
– Government of Angola, SNI, minute nº 136, 02-01-1935.
Acronyms should be written out in full and be included in the bibliographical list.
