This charter serves to announce the initiation of the Reading Strategies for First
Graders project. We are undertaking this project to help first-grade students at John E.
Steinbeck Elementary School with word recognition, word patterns, and to build
automaticity while reading. This capstone project will apply all the things learned in the
Master of Instructional Science and Technology program. We will teach students
reading strategies and help students improve their reading performance.

Nuong Nguyen has been selected to lead this project. The first-grade teachers and
instructional coach will also provide input on the design of the eLearning modules. The
first-grade students will also be asked to give suggestions for further improvements.
The project will be fully completed in three to four months.

Please provide your complete cooperation to the project and to Nuong Nguyen and to
the first-grade students undertaking this project. It is crucial that the students receive
the support needed to complete this project so that students become fluent readers and
are college and career ready according to the common core state standards. Any
issues that arise will be reported to Dr. Christina Palmer, the first-grade team, or
instructional coach.
