 We should follow the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
 Reduce- lets minimize our waste
 Reuse- don’t throw materials when we can still use it again
 Recycle- convert waste materials into new materials

Reporter’s Notebook: Problema sa basura ng Pilipinas, masosolusyonan pa ba?

 There’s a total of 523 open dumpsites in the Philippines, and 86 sanitary landfills are currently use.
 Last 2017 DENR planned to close the 2 biggest landfill in the Philippines, the Inayawan landfill in Cebu and the
Payatas Landfill in Quezon City.
 In Payatas land fill, trucks of garbage don’t have proper segregation. It is said that Quezon city is the 2nd biggest
producer of garbage in Metro Manila and the space provided for the landfill was increasing and affect the
resident of Brgy. Payatas it is also alarming that the extract of garbage should directly go to the water resources.
 In Inayawan land fill, DENR decide to close it last September 2016 for violating the Clean Air Act, Ecological Solid
Waste management Act and the Sanitation Code of the Philippines.
 The local government of the 2 city had been given a chance to find an alternative dumpsite
 It is said in RA 9003 that it is the obligation of the local government to have a proper waste disposal such as
segregation in each household and a right operation of materials and recovery facilities before it dispose to
landfill. But 27% out of 1,1515 local government units comply with RA 9003.
 It is possible to reduce the tons of waste that dispose in landfill and help lots of agricultural land from
composted materials if people and local government segregate it properly and comply with the rules and
regulations of Solid waste management.

life for your family you wouldn’t think that collecting garbage is a dirty job.

The government should somehow recognize the idea of Harrelson about the garbage barge to be able to maximize the
positive useful side of it, since they still continue to seek for solution. The idea of him can be a useful product for the
benefit of the citizen as well as the country itself with a proper cautions of course, since methane can lead to the
destruction of our environment.
