Musim Mas Best Management Practices (BMPs)

in Oil Palm Cultivation & Processing

Introduction
The Musim Mas Group has in place many sound practices in the cultivation and production of palm oil that
are consistent with the principles of sustainable agriculture and production. This brief presentation provides
some examples of the best management practices (BMPs) in the plantations and processing facilities.

Musim Mas Group Palm Oil Processing Facilities

The Group has nine palm oil mills with included kernel crushing plants. These plants have been constructed
to Musim Mas design for efficient extraction of CPO and PKO of good quality at minimum cost and in line
with the latest manufacturing practices.

Pre- Nursery Main Nursery

Nursery Practices
High nursery management standards are adhered to in order to enable production of high quality planting
materials for field planting. This is prerequisite for high sustainable yields from the plantings.

Land Preparation
The zero burning technique is always in the preparation of new land for cultivation. This approach prevents
atmospheric pollution, promotes the recycling of biomass and maintains soil fertility.

approaches such as the use of virus and Cordyceps fungus to control leaf eating pests. Barn owls are used for
controlling rats. Beneficial plants have been planted to augment the population of natural enemies of pests.

Safe and Effective Use of Pesticides

When application of pesticides is deemed necessary, particularly for the control of weeds, every effort is made
to ensure that they are properly applied. All operators are trained and provided with personal protective
equipment. Practices are also in place to ensure proper storage of pesticides and disposal of used containers.

Effluent Treatment
Palm oil mill effluents are treated biologically in a series of ponds for anaerobic and facultative digestion
before discharge for land application. In some mills digested effluent is further treated using aerobic systems
to prepare the effluent to meet the standards for watercourse discharge. Routine intensive monitoring of
effluent quality is carried out to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Use of By-Products from Mills

By-products from the processing of FFB are used as fuel or applied as organic fertilizers. Palm fibre, empty
fruit bunches (EFB) and kernel shell are used as solid fuel for the mills. EFBs are also applied in the fields as
mulch. Treated palm oil mill effluent (POME) is also a source of plant nutrients.
