Aga Khan Health Service and MSD Sign Partnership Agreement

Dar es Salaam (December 20, 2018) — Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania and Medical
Stores Department (MSD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with broad goals to
strengthen supply systems and work together to acquire products which are of acceptable
quality, reliability and cost. Aga Khan Health Service is the first private healthcare provider in
Tanzania to sign this agreement which is a milestone in establishing effective public private
partnerships.

The purpose therefore of signing this Memorandum of Understanding is not only to ensure
cooperation between two entities but also to mutually benefit both organizations in fulfilling
their respective mandates.

Sulaiman Shahabuddin, Regional CEO for Aga Khan Health Services in East Africa, said, “We
are grateful to the Medical Stores Department, for enabling the Aga Khan Health Service,
Tanzania to have an assurance of reliable quality supplies. In addition to supply of key clinical
consumables like Pharmaceuticals, medical surgical and Radiology products, the MOU will
also cover for MSD and AKHST to work together to develop and explore markets and enhance
sourcing base, conduct joint training on supply chain management, identify key vendors and
have strategic dialogue and partnership including sharing of innovative practices that can
improve supply chain efficiency”

MSD’s willingness to supply these Medical, Surgical and Pharma products which are duly
approved by respective Regulatory Authorities is a remarkable sign for successful operations
and performance derived from a long journey of building integrity, infrastructures, human
resources, system and logistics required to meet the desires of the populations with to improve
the quality of health care service delivery and overcome the disease burden in Tanzania.
Laurean Rugambwa Bwanakunu, Director General Medical Stores Department (MSD), said,
“We are grateful to sign this MOU today with Aga Khan, and let me assure you that we will
at all time cooperate with them by giving all necessary information in procurement service
delivery and other logistics issues in all of your health service delivery points.”
In this regard, MSD will now be sharing with Aga Khan our weekly and monthly stock status
report, prices and all supply chain updates together with supporting them in ordering
procedures familiarization.

About Medical Stores Department (MSD)


Medical Stores Department (MSD) was established by the Act of Parliament No.13 of 1993 as
an autonomous department under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender,
Elderly and Children responsible for developing, maintaining and managing an efficient and
cost effective system of procurement, storage and distribution of approved medicines and
medical supplies required for use by all public facilities and private healthy facilities approved
by the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.

MSD serves a total of 7,519 Health Facilities all over the country, and it is geographically
located in 10 (ten) zones and 7 (seven) pharmacies strategically located across the country. All
MSD customers receive their medicines, medical supplies and laboratory reagents from MSD
through Direct Delivery.
