Company Profile
Established in 1971, CBS Products Ltd is a leading provider of solutions and

equipment to the installers of power transmission lines and telecom networks
around the world.
From our base in Oakham, in the East Midlands, the company started life as a
manufacturer of cable jointing equipment and gradually diversified into winching
equipment for the power transmission industry. With the deregulation of the
electricity industry in the 80’s the newly privatised National Grid embarked on a
diversification policy and entered the field of telecommunications, installing
fibre cables along transmission line networks. This provided an opportunity for
the company to develop a line of pullers and tensioners specifically for this
work.
Our expose to the UK Telecoms market meant that the company’s expertise and
know-how rapidly came to the attention of the major players in the fibre optic
cable world. As a corollary, CBS became the partner of choice in a number of
high profile, international fibre optic cable projects, notably in Russia, Malaysia
and Zimbabwe. These projects provided further opportunities for the company
to show off its prowess in developing innovative solutions capable of
withstanding extreme conditions, both of climate and terrain.
Towards the end of the 90’s the company’s continuing quest for new horizons
culminated in the development of the Tornado series of fibre optic blowing
machines. These have proved highly successful both in the UK and Export
markets. In the UK alone the Tornado beat off all competition in a very
demanding trial, enabling CBS Products Ltd to win a highly prestigious contract
to become exclusive suppliers of Cable Blowing Equipment to British
Telecommunications (BT).

C-680 Bulldog Overhead Line Winch
The CBS 680 Bulldog winch has been designed to

provide a compact, transportable unit for overhead
line stringing work. The self-contained winch is
powered by an 11hp petrol engine and the precise
control required is provided by the hydraulic
circuit. There are drums for various applications
and these are easily interchanged.
Designed to tow behind even small vehicles, the

Bulldog winch is lightweight and can be easily
positioned by one man. Operational stability is
provided by ground anchors on the towbar, or by
employing the towing vehicle as an anchor.
The C-680 Bulldog is a British Universal Winch

designed to meet the needs of overhead line
engineers. The various options permit use on aerial
bundle (ABC), Copper, Aluminium and ACSR
Conductors.

C-821 Hydraulic Universal Winch
The CBS 821 Universal Winch offers the constant

pulling tension of a double capstan drive and the
flexibility of a direct drive drum in one machine.
The winch employs a powerful petrol engine mounted

with associated hydraulics on a sturdy trailer unit.
The precise hydraulic controls allow easy operation
through one fail-safe lever. Ideally suited for ABC
erection, 11/33kV stringing work, conductor recovery
and underground cable handling.

C-825 Portable Hydraulic Winching
System
The CBS 825 is designed to provide a fully portable

winching system, by breaking down into easily
transportable modules. Ideally suited for overhead
line stringing work such as ABC conductors, bare
conductors or re-conductoring projects, it provides
a flexible system suitable where access is
restricted and ground disturbance is undesirable.
The winch can be pole mounted or ground mounted

The CBS 1020 Puller is designed to provide the

facilities necessary for safe Overhead Line
Stringing. Ease of operation is provided with a
flexible hydraulic drive system, which enables rapid
pulling rates, or higher pulling forces, within a single
control. The system is fail-safe and incorporates
an automatic spring applied hydraulic brake.
The unit is fitted with a self-loading hydraulic drive

reel winder for conductor or rope take up. The reel
winder is elevated vertically for transportation.

The CBS 1004 Tensioner is designed to provide

smooth control of fibre optic cable tension during
the stringing operations. Cable is tensioned
directly from the drum, and controlled braking is
provided via a gearbox to the hydraulic variable
tension controls.

relevant safety requirements for lifting loads. Two
fully automatic, fail – safe-braking systems are
incorporated into the unit. The first is si tuated
directly in the transmission line and functions every
time the winch controls are operated. The second is
mounted in direct contact with the rope drum and is
controlled by sensing system acting on the main
drive chain and the hydraulic oil pressure. In the
unlikely event that the chain should fail, or all

A tractor mounted 5 tonne hydraulic winch with

variable speed control for both forward and reverse
winching. Based on a Landini (Legend) DT105 tractor

C-1035 Lightweight Capstan Winch
The C-1035 Lightweight Capstan Winch is designed

for use over manholes.
Powered by a Honda Engine through a right angle

C-1045 Pull and Assist Winch
The C-1045 winch has been designed to meet the

requirements of installing telecommunication cables,
employing a 760mm diameter single capstan to
impact a controlled force to the pulling rope or
cable. The single capstan allows the winch to be
placed at the mid point of a section to assist in the
pull, thus enabling longer pulls to be achieved.
The C-1045 has a rope take up drum, which is driven

independently via a hydraulic motor. The take up
drum has a detachable side, which allows the rope
on the drum to be removed in a tidy coil and can be
declutched from the drive to allow the rope to be
pulled out manually when threading.
The winch is powered by a 13hp petrol engine that

drives a fixed displacement hydraulic pump, which
in turn drives the low speed, high torque, hydraulic
motor. The motor drives the capstan through an
epicyclical gearbox.
The pulling tension is mounted on a dial read out,

allowing the operator to monitor the pull. Tension is
adjustable from 0 – 500kg. The winch will stop
pulling at the selected tension without stopping the
engine, thereby protecting the cable. The C-1045 is
built on a robust steel chassis. The trailer
equipment complies with European Standards and
has a single axle, overrun brakes and jockey wheel .

W1-CDS-50H Conductor Drum Stand
The drum stands are self-loading. Each stand can

be raised or lowered independently, using a built-in
jack. The stands are capable of carrying drums upto
6 tonnes in weight, and will accommodate drums
upto 2.300mm in diameter. The stand is
manufactured in two halves to allow easy access
with full drums.
The drive to the drum stands is provided via a

combined motor/brake reduction gear assembly,
which is secured directly to the end of the drum
spindle.
When used in conjunction with a Puller/Tensioner,

the stands are connected to it via 20m long hoses,
and quick release couplings to allow flexibility in
positioning. The drive is fully hydrostatic and
incorporates a spring applied/pressure release
brake to positively hold the drum stationary when
tensioning stops.
These drum stands have been designed to accept a

full range of conductor drums, ranging from
1200mm to 2200mm diameter and upto six tonnes in

The “BREEZE” Cable Blowing Machine has been

designed to meet the growing need for the
installation of micro cables. Small and portable with
ergonomic controls, it is ideally suited for external or
internal use. The compliant double driven cable rollers
provide secure grip whilst safely handling the cable.
The pushing force can be set to match the cable
stiffness, and the speed control is fully adjustable

Micro Cable Fleeting Device
The Micro Cable Fleeting device has been developed

Breeze Cable Drum Cradle
The Drum Cradle has been designed to lift 2 x 1200

mm maximum diameter of micro duct with a total
weight of 200kg. The Drum Cradle is a rigid
tubular steel construction with a detachable drum
spindle and drum spacer, the drum spacer prevents
the drums from rotating against each other. The
drum shaft is locked in position by a sprung loaded
plunger that can be fixed to allow removal of the
drum spindle.
When the drums are loaded into the frame the

handle can be swung over such that the ground
frame is upper most and used to move the drums
around the site.

Compressed Air Cooler
Ideally the compressed air entering the Cable

Blowing Machine should be cool and moisture free
to optimise the cable blowing process. This is
achieved by a Compressed Air Cooler.
The air cooler, fitted with an air driven fan, is

installed between the compressor and blowing
machine. The unit is fitted with an air driven fan.
The air supply is filtered and lubricated and has a

water separator with an automatic condensate
drain.

Cable Fleeter
The Fleeter replaces the manual method of “figure

of eighting” cable, and provides protection and
security for the cable.
Following installation of the cable in the first leg of

the duct route the balance of the cable is removed
from the drum and fed into the “Fleeter”, thereby
releasing the cable end ready for blowing into the
second leg.
The Fleeter provides a smooth and simple system

whilst ensuring cable protection from pedestrians

or vehicles and prevents contamination from mud,
soil or dust.
The Fleeter is designed to work in conjunction with
the Cable Blowing Machine, which provides the C-1265-20-01-R1 Cable Fleeting Device
cable feed in and out of the “Fleeter”.

allowing drum lengths of 4,000 metres to be
utilized.

Duct Checking Equipment
Direct buried ducts can suffer from compaction,

reduction or other obstructions, therefore, before
cable installation begins, CBS recommends that each
length of duct is checked for continuity and freedom
from obstruction. Various items of hardware are
available for checking the ducts.
A precision locator supplied with an appropriate duct

Sonde(s), allows the duct route to be checked for
continuity. The Sonde transmitter is blown along the
route length, stopping at any blockage. The blockage
is found by locating the Sonde with the locator.
Please state the duct inside dimensions when

Pressurisation Kit
The CBS Duct Pressurisation Kit has been designed

to test the integrity of the duct by checking that
the duct has no leaks. This will confirm that the
duct holds air pressure, prior to cable blowing.
The kit comprises of a pressure regulator with

gauge and valves. The system connects to the
compressor and the duct for pressurising. Once up
to pressure the air in the duct is locked in and the
pressure monitored.

Tube Blowing Conversion Kits

The CBS Cable Overblowing Junction Box has been

designed to install a new cable into an existing
occupied sub-duct (subject to space being
available). Or alternatively used for blowing micro
tubes over previously installed cable.
The Cable Overblowing Junction Box comprises a

robust aluminium base and lid that form a
pressurised air chamber into which one end of an
existing occupied sub-duct can be attached.
The existing cable can exit the Cable Overblowing

Junction Box from either of the two branches to
suit the best installation, the vacant branch is then
connected to a CBS Cable Blowing Machine via a
short slave length of sub-duct for the installation
of the extra cable.
A range of customer selected cable seals, cable

collets and sub-duct collets are available for cable
or duct tube installation using the CBS Overblowing
Junction Box.

collapse the tubes. The system charges the tubes on their drums, this keeps the micro tubes stiff and resilient
during the tube installation procedure.

Blown Fibre Unit
The Blown Fibre Machine has been developed to

complement the existing range of fibre cable blowing
equipment available from CBS Products Ltd. The
Blown Fibre Machine is designed to fit the smaller
end of fibre range from 2 to 12 fibres (1 to 2mm
diameter), thereby providing the complete range of
fibre blowing installation systems from one company.

retaining flexibility. The 80% fill rate glass fibre core is reinforced with a high strength resin. A braided

Sprint Conduit Rod
The CBS Sprint Rod is a handy device for smaller

conduit applications, using 3mm polypropylene-coated
fibreglass rod in lengths ranging from 20m –50m. A
range of accessories such as flexible ends, fixed ends
and pulling eyes are available, which can be stored in the
central compartment of the plastic cassette. The
product is lightweight, with a carrying handle and is
ideal for short rodding applications.

Transformer Bogie
The CBS Transformer Bogie has been designed to

manually move transformers over short distances
from one location to another by one operator.
The sturdy lightweight all steel construction frame
incorporates a detachable lifting bracket that can
be fitted to any one of four positions to best suit
the transformer being moved. Wide pneumatic
wheels with ball bearing hubs are fitted to aid
travelling especially when on soft terrain.
The operator selects the best position for the
lifting bracket, and then manoeuvres the
transformer bogie into position to locate the lifting
hook into the lifting bracket on the transformer, by
pulling back on the handle the transformer is lifted
clear of the ground, it can be moved to the new
location.

Yaletrac Cable Pullers
Yaletrac® cable pullers feature a lightweight,

compact, high strength aluminium housing, smooth
contour design with a large, flat bottom surface for
increased stability in horizontal and vertical
working positions.
Forward and reversing levers in tandem provide slim

design and assure power transfer along the centre
line. Overload protection is by a shearing pin in the
forward lever. Spare shear pins are conveniently
located in the carrying handle or operating lever. A
broken pin can be replaced without removing the
load.
A lever disengages the rope clamp system allowing

easy, smooth installation of the wire rope.
Yaletrac® uses a special flexible wire rope. It has

six strands with a steel core and is identified by an
orange strand. The rope is tapered at one end for

aerial perch, each of these 12in high heavy canvas
buckets has a tough vulcanised rubber bottom and
reinforced steel ring mouth to give you years of
heavy -duty use.
Spanning the mouth of each bucket is rope handle,

which runs between two grommets riveted to
opposite sides of the bucket. The rope is long
enough so that it won’t get in your way if you have

Safety Belts and Harnesses
The work-positioning belt is intended for the use of

linesmen and other workers required working at
heights on poles or other structures in a supported
position thereby enabling them to have both hands
free for working. (They are not intended for fall
arrest) A D-415-F may also be integrated with a
full body harness, giving full fall arrest protection
combined with a work positioning facility.
The D-415-F is manufactured from strong durable

polyester webbing and is fitted with a wide back
support. A fully adjustable body belt and pole strap
makes it easy for the wearer to obtain a
comfortable fit and at the same time to able to
achieve the correct working position required.

Tree Pruning Head
The Tree Pruning Head is ideal for tree clearing
near overhead power lines. It is suitable for
fitment upon a standard operating pole top section,
by use of an aluminium adaptor for rigid location
when cutting. The spring loaded side action-cutting
blade is able to cut branches up to 1.75” (44mm)
diameter. Operation is facilitated by a 2-metre
chain and 9 metre operating rope, which is fitted to
the blade-operating lever, for ease of use from
ground level.

standard intermediate pole sections with oval joint
button. The curved 6-tpi blade facilitates a cutting
action on both forward and backward strokes,

steel and lacquered to ensure a long service life.
The blade is bonded and riveted into the pole head
